2015 Silverado Navigation up, are you kidding???

Just checked the cost to update the very poor, nearly worthless navigation system in my 2015 Silverado. More often than not it can't find an address, takes me the long way around or can't locate anything at all. Huge waste of money as an option...and now for only $159.995 I can get the latest updates for it. ARE YOU KIDDING ??? I can buy a whole new GPS for that and get free updates for life! If you are buying a new Chevrolet...don't waste any money on the piece of krap Navigation system....And now ask me how I really feel about it.

Bill... I hope your GPS is voice guided. You shouldn't be looking at a GPS while driving. It will tell you where to go. I can't count how many collisions I have investigated over the years where the at fault driver tells me they were looking at or fiddling with the GPS and didn't realize that traffic was slowing. And those are only the ones being honest about it... I have a feeling that it is much more prevalent then some people will admit.

Anywho, I stream music from my phone to my truck radio. The GPS overrides the music and tells me where to turn. My co-pilot is also the one that fiddles with the GPS to look for gas stations, food, etc. When I am driving, I focus on the road. The bride focuses on navigation.

Having a big screen to distract you while you are moving 8+ tons down the highway at speed is dangerous...

that's why I got a Garmin with lifetime updates included. nice large screen, but I guess if somebody spends mega hundreds on a smart phone and monthly fees they gotta use it.
but $159 to update a gps, that's half the cost or more of an entire Garmin with lifetime updates.

For long distance trips, I much prefer the Garmin with a larger screen, but especially the extra info. it will display. I also prefer to keep my phone free for phone use. I also like how it is easy on a Garmin (or similar device) to look for things along your route like gas stations, food, etc. Google maps will not allow this. Google Maps does have much better traffic, so when navigating a big city, my wife generally has a phone with Google Maps running in addition to the paper atlas she keeps handy. Garmin or Google can send you in a bad place at times, especially in remote areas where road types are generally less well defined or there are more "roads" in the database that aren't really roads generally traveled (especially with an RV).

Around home when driving around for business or going to new places, I just use my phone.

Skip the first half if you already have a google account. Just go to the
actual map usage section

Had this on my smart phone, but too small hand held and smaller yet on the dash
Plus, as Jeremiah said...a call disrupts the session...to have to touch and
restart maps

Asking if the OEM integrated Nav program has as much info? Don't think so,
as they do not get local to your GPS XY coordinates as Google Maps. Those
traffic conditions highlighted in green/yellow/red/etc are based on Internet
traffic (local news, local traffic agencies, tweets, etc) to display conditions
and offers to alternate routes

No thanks - I don't want to be looking at a dinky cell phone screen in traffic when I don't know where I'm going. And besides the dinky screen, if it's in a holder then it's really too far out there to use in heavy traffic - it's either that or you're holding it in one hand further distracting you. I much prefer my large screen Garmin 760 that I can just quickly glance at. And what do you do with a cell phone out west when you loose data coverage? I haven't lost satellite contact with my 760 except inside of a tunnel.

Bill

Had a coworker get lost on a trip to Memphis because she was relying on her cell phone and she hit some dead spots along the way and dropped the map.

I will take my stand alone GPS any day over my phone ...(darn calls always seem to come in when I really need navi)

Thanks!

Not really. Using Google Maps requires very little data. We use our smartphone GPS for most camping trips and we don't notice any extra data usage. Don't get me wrong, it uses SOME data... but not enough that we see a difference in day to day usage.

On a trip to Beaver Lake AR our RV760 GPS warned us of low over pass on our route and routed us around it. When we check it out later and found that it 13 foot 6 inches railroad overpass on a very narrow two lane road. It was small valley on very busy two lane road with ditches on both sides, if we had to backup and turn around it would been about a mile before there was a place to turn around. That alone made me believer in owning a GPS that is made for RVs...

I paid over $4500.00 in CA state sales tax when I bought my 2011/2500HD Silverado. No product/benefit received for $4500.00 spent. At least you received a service/product upgrade for your $159.00. Sounds like a good deal to me.

I don't know, we love our GPS navigation in our vehicles. Never had an issue getting use where we are going, asks if we want to reroute for traffic jams. Finds POI, restaurants, fuel stations, hotels and weather alerts. Not sure what is wrong with the OP's system but the unit in Dads 14 Caddy works great. I would take the OE system over a standalone any time.

My nav was a $500.00 option. I didn't have time to order a truck so I took what they had. It also has On Star but at $$30 to $40 dollars a month to renew that, I can get by just fine without it. I hate it when they use their scare tactics to make you want to renew it. I've been driving for over 50 years and got by with a map and never had a need to call Onstar. Like a lot of older folks, my cellphone is a flip phone with big numbers. I almost never use that either. All this technology is fine for some but it really doesn't interest me at all. But I do like fast cars and faster women...

B.O.

you don't need onstar to use GM's navigation, they are two separate operations.
