2016 Colorado Diesel...Finally a price!!!!

Yesterday the local Chevy dealer here in Iowa where I am working called me. He had finally been able to get an actual price on a diesel equipped Colorado. He priced out exactly what I wanted on the truck...Crew Cab SB 4x4 with only the diesel package and heated seats. It is interesting though that the block heater is optional...so I added that $70.00 option as well...

Sticker price was $39,070.00. They will sell it for $37,500.00 plus tax.GM is dropping the ball on the way they force you to order a truck with packages that drive the cost up with options you would not order but must purchase if you want the diesel. These are packages above and beyond what is included in the diesel option.

I did not order the truck. When Deb was out here two weeks ago, we talked about her transportation needs. Her truck is no longer reliable enough for me to feel comfortable with her at home and me working 750 miles away. We decided to look at used SUV's. They are high enough to give her the visibility she wants and she really never uses her pickup as a pickup anymore...so...

We bought a low mileage 2010 Subaru Outback Limited...for less than 30% of the cost of the Colorado. I will drive it between the two jobs I am building (75 miles apart) until mid October. She will fly out here one way and drive it home...

I have been driving the Subaru Outback for the last ten days or so and I am very impressed with the SUV.Excellent fuel mileage and very comfortable...and my DuraMax is not being driven 150 to 200 miles a day as a basic transporter.

Never would think someone would cross shop a new mid size truck vs a used Subaru wagon. But I am glad you are happy with the purchase.

Tons of Subies in Colorado. Usually driving in the left lane 5 mph under the speed limit with left leaning bumper stickers on the windows.

Insane is in the eyes of the beholder I guess.

The biggest problem that some of us have is being forced into a bunch of extra options that we don't necessarily want.

A basic "work truck" with the diesel would be quite the affordable little rig, and they would fly off the lots.

I understand that forcing the extra options is GM's way of regulating sales to ensure that they can keep up with demand, but it would be nice if it wasn't that way.

Putting 10-ply tires on half ton trucks since aught-four.

yep...a stripped down base model that is much larger than we need...I have a very nice DuraMax dually for those jobs...me, I like the loaded leather seat trucks and would order one for me...but this would have been Deb's truck, a replacement for her 02 SuperCrew. She does not like leather seats, fancy radios and all those belle and whistles...and she wanted a smaller truck...she would own a Sport Trac if Ford had not screwed us so badly on the 2011 pickup...kinda a moot point now...the new to us Subie is proving to be a great choice...I like it so much I am having second thoughts about turning it over to her next month...

I would think that the little 5 cylinder Powerstroke they put in the Transit might be a good fit for that truck as well.

It is the same 3.2 you get in the Transit, that is in the Global Ranger.

Well I'm one and believe me our new Canyon isn't loaded by any means. They make em, you just have to search for em as they are in short supply. I even put a downpayment on it while it was still on the rail car :B Heck I was looking at used ones both Colorado and Canyons and they were sold before I could get there. Biggest thing I miss is the Cruise Control followed closely by the keyless entry. I find myself checking for keys in hand before hitting the lock button waaaaaaaaay to much.

Good friend of mine just bought a crew cab Colorado z71 V6 wow!! very nice truck and his fuel mileage is great . Very fun to drive yet looks big on outside. I think the diesel Colorado/canyon will sell extremely well even with the bells an whistles.

I agree, that is something that I hated about GM when I was looking at half tons. In order to get the 6.2 gas engine in a half ton GM product, you had to step up pretty high in the trim department. I didn't want all the fancy gizmo's and gadgets, and I sure didn't want to pay the price for them. I ended up buying my Tundra because I could get a pretty base model Tundra with the big V8 engine for thousands less than a GM, because they forced me to add options I didn't need or want.

I really think they are shooting themselves in the foot with that sales model. GM guys like their trucks and will continue to buy them... but I wonder how many people are like me and aren't brand loyal and don't want to be forced to buy options I don't want in order to get the one option (engine) that I do want.

Been waiting to see what the mid size diesels can do and pricing... not a beta tester either.. My daughter wanted an used Outback a few months ago, the guy was over priced by $3,000 and did not want to come down, then softened a bit when I pointed out some things, along with telling him that the book values take into account where you are, that is why they want your zip.. We passed on it, lots of corrosion under the hood, like the battery exploded and the acid was not cleaned up promptly or something.. too many parts to risk having to replace them..

Good to hear from you Ricatic

I was not going to mention the "I think I'll wait until someone else consumer tests this product" scenario. I realize I am not buying another Ford POS that they will not stand behind but the foul taste of being screwed over by Ford while essentially testing their 6.7 diesel makes me a bit leery about testing anyone's new product. This "consumer testing" for the Colorado diesel was on my mind but the first reports from Deb's son at GM were encouraging. He has since changed his opinion a bit. As the miles pile up on their early production test mules, there are some minor issues to work through. He told his mom that we likely made a good decision to buy the Subaru at this time...I was not told what the small issues are but I will be home over Labor Day and will try to find out what are the issues.

I am not out of the market for a diesel Colorado or Canyon...just in a holding pattern for now...

In your original post, it seemed that you were surprised by the price of $39,000. Then, in this post, you said you were not surprised by the price. And, you also stated that you are in a "holding pattern" now. So, I assume that you are still hoping to get one, but maybe waiting a year or so.

I think the Colorado is an excellent choice. It is attracting people who might not necessarily own a pickup because they don't want to drive a large vehicle. Ford and FCA are missing out on a great opportunity. Ford wisely offers so many SUV sizes (Expedition, Explorer, Flex, Edge, Escape) because not everyone wants to drive an Expedition, yet they think that everyone who wants a pickup should get a full size pickup. It's not all about fuel economy or price, because there is a lot of overlap on fuel economy and price in the various Ford SUV offerings. I read this week in Automotive News that Ford is now thinking about bringing back the Ranger in 2018, probably due to seeing GM's success in that market. I also laugh when people make comments about mid size trucks stealing market share from full size trucks. GM's full size trucks are selling extremely well right now, even though the mid size models are now available. GM did the right thing by bringing a modern mid size pickup to the market, and the results speak for themselves. It looks like Ford has now finally decided to do the same.

Hey Ric my little Canyon with the V6 just got back from touring Yellowstone for a week. It surprised me with milage of 27.5 all at 6-8K elevation. Not bad for under $30k. But dang I miss the cruise control and keyless entry options.

Yep Rick you made a good choice by waiting. The earlier 14 Eco-Diesel's have had egr and emissions issues that the older 14 trucks do not. A number of them have been bought back or the customer was given a free extended warranty for their troubles. That was why I waited until 15 to order mine and other then the cruise control switch and mirror puddle lamp the truck has been great. Average fuel mileage has been mid to high 27 highway 22+ combined and 18+ city. Towing a 6000#+ boat nets me 14-16.
