Thinner tires will do better in rain, snow or mud and fatter ones in sand. What type of traction do you need?
You can also mix tread widths and types as long as overall height is the same. You can go with a wider less aggressive front tire to keep down tread noise yet give you good flotation and use skinnier more aggressive rear tires to give you more bite. In this case, your spare should match what you choose for the rear.
