Have been noticing more photos of 2500 duramax trucks and the hoods seem to be camouflaged with more venting. Could this be from a next Gen duramax ??

I haven't used a full tank yet in almost 5000 miles. I've only towed about 600 of those miles, though.

I think the difference in the amount of DEF the three use isnt close to material in the scheme of things, unless you rupture your GM tank and it empties all at once. :B

Yes it is, that is just another reason why I am interested in the new GMC or Ford.

My Ram goes 10,000 miles between oil changes. I use it to haul my camper and a trailer. It goes through a tank of DEF about every 3,000 miles or so. Having a continuous level gauge is very nice. Having easy access to the DEF port is very nice too.

Wow, that Ram is a DEF pig! No wonder they put the DEF fill where they did. My GMC, which btw has a DEF gauge as well, went 6650 miles until I got to the 29% DEF remaining or about 1000 miles left.

The DEF tank on the GM is 5.3 gallons.

how big is the ram DEF tank? my GMC tank is 5 gallons and good for 5,000 miles towing, and 7,000 or more running empty. DEF tank level readout starts at 30% left which is good for at least another 1500 miles.

While on the subject of DEF, Ford and GM both ought to add a DEF tank gauge too. It's nice to have a good idea of what you've got in there instead of just waiting for the idiot light to come on, which may not be at the most opportune moment.

Not really a big deal... I change the oil and fill DEF tank. I don't recall how the GM DEF level feedback works, but the Ford system starts warning the driver with 800 miles left. That's more than enough warning to locate some DEF and fill the tank.

I think when GM went to that larger fuel tank, Titan fuel tanks cried a river.

For the 2-3 times a year to refill I have no issue with the DEF fill under the hood.

GM could have put it next to the fuel fill but then would be dealing with a similar scenario that some Powerstroke owners have dealt with putting DEF in their fuel tank. Dope! Yes, you can stop stupid...

As far as the DEF tank location I can see concern with those that do heavy offroading which is a pretty small number for HD owners. As far as aesthetics once you throw on a set of side steps is pretty tough to notice. If you crawl up under one of these trucks you will see there really aren't options for relocating the tank once GM decided to go to the larger 36gal fuel tank on the short bed trucks. I will happily take the larger fuel tank over moving the DEF tank back inside the frame rails if it means going back to a little ol 26gal fuel tank.

Yes, that 36 gallon tank is a HUGE improvement over the previous 26 gallon tank.

Once you get to 30% remaining on the GM the guage gives you a remaining DEF reading. above that it just says "DEF OK". And it give a remainin mileage at times as well. 30% is about 800 miles.

yes, a reading of 100% to 0% would be nicer, but the 30% give me more than enough time to refill.

moving the DEF fill from under the hood would be nice as well.

Is there any truth to the rumor that GM and Ford have been working on a HD 10-Speed trans? I expected the new 2017 Ford Superduty to have the 10 speed but it won't. Its the same 6 speed they already have.

DEF is 32% ammonia and water.

It is interesting. Mine says OK until it gets to around 25% and then it gives you percentages and miles until empty. I would also like to see it give percentages the entire range from 100% to 0%. At 25% I still had 800 or so miles until I was out of DEF.

Yea I would like to see the DEF tank moved. I don't think it is the issue that some like to make it to be, but never the less, it is perceived to be an issue by many, so they should move it for no other reason than to shut people up about it. I filled mine for the first time since I bought the pickup a couple weeks ago. I filled it at a truck stop. I don't mind the under the hood fill location. That urea is kind interesting stuff when it dries. Kinda looks like cement. No wonder it takes out fuel systems.
