Hey folks, my daughter's boyfriend wants to buy a 5th wheel with a pin weight of 2500# dry and pull it with his 2006 3/4 ton GMC D/M.I'm trying to talk him out of it but he says the salesman says that he can do it. Any suggestions???

Thanks 45Ricochet, I'm a newbie and didn't want to say anything but what was said sort of didn't make much sense but then I'm not very well versed in Chev or GM specs. Thanks so much for your input.

My single wheel rigs were in the 1800-2400 lbs on the rear axel depending upon if a reg vs ext vs crew cab. You should have 3000+ lbs or so to work with.

Well that is the information we needed, I tow over GVWR, but under Rear axle rating by a decent amount. He stands a very good chance of being over on both. I also do it on stock suspension, guessing that that would require bags to level, then all bets are off.
I also think those that state about 2,800# empty on rear axle are off a bit. I know I can't put 3,000# on my rear axles at a 6,084# rating.

That TC would probably be about 4K the way I load things. So about 4500 abouve base wt of 4800 lbs, so just a bit over 9K lbs or there abouts.....no issues!!!

You forgot those folks with 4 kids, all under the age of say 6 or 7 that might weigh what 200-300 lbs between them, and forget or seem to not care that them whipper snappers grow at about 10 lbs per kid per year.........Or they believe the folks that happen to be nothing more than a couple! oh you will only load some 800-1000 lbs into said RV.......hmmmmmmm...... I was closer to 3000 lbs of gear, and 1200-1300 for my said family of 6 when I had 4 adult sized teens......

Well anyway......

So your the first guy I know who hauls a dry camper, congrats buddy. OBTW that unladen rear axle weight is not correct in the example for the CC anyway.
Same old same old. 1500 guy wanting to be a 2500 guy excuse, 2500 guy wanting to be a 3500 guy excuse, and the 3500 SRW guy wanting to be the DRW excuse. Oh then the real over kill group, the HDT guys. Good grief RV's only weigh 20K max, why a Class 8. To each their own I guess.

I'd haul that TC rico, on my reg cab sw rig. BUT not a crew cab!

Payload is the thing to worry about, ALL trucks today even the SB8's have more HP/torque than most BB's and many TD' of yore!

Well the cats out of the bag now. All Chevy's are the same. Congrats 3500 owners :W Somehow I thought springs were part of the suspension :H The badge is the only difference we're being told. Next we'll hear the DRW 3500 actually has less capacity because of the weight of the two extra wheels and tires :W
Boy I knew the "smart guy" had a 2500 :B More weight threads soon Marty :W
OBTW a Lance TC 990 is 2850 dry. Sounds like fun in a SRW TV.

Be sneaky ... encourage your daughter's boyfriend to join up and become a member on RV.net and start reading. If he has any intelligence at all, he'll "see the light" after reading a bit here!

That is exactly what I told them. It's not a question of whether or not the truck can pull it's if it can carry the load. The engine I'm sure has plenty of power.

My parents pull around 14500lbs but with a 1 ton dually. I would not pull the camper u mentioned with a 3/4 ton, just to much weight. Sure the truck has the power, but man that's a lot of overall wieght for a 3/4ton to pull...
A truck, a camper, a few toys, but most importantly a wonderful family.

I believe it's an extended cab. As for air bags they do not increase your payload as far as I have been told. They only assist with leveling off the vehicle.

Crew cab or reg cab? I'd put that trailer behind a reg cab, but not a crew cab. Crew cabs have half the payload a reg cab has. In fact, my C2500 reg can is 300 lbs shy of the payload my 05 crew cab dually had and double the 96 sw K3500!

The GVW of the trailer is 17000 and the 2500 lbs. is dry weight. It will weigh conciderably more with propane, bedding, clothing, etc. The trailer weighs 14000 dry.
