I know there are some guys running excursion v10s on here with 4:30 gears was wondering if anyone started with 3:73s? Got a quote from a local shop for 1500 installed with factory gears in the rear and an aluminum cover for the rear. I thought it would be more so I think I am going to have him do it in November once the season is over I was looking for opinions. I am towing a Summerland 2670 around 7300 loaded and it tows ok but it's really hilly in NE Pa and I think 4:30 would help a lot plus I may go a little bigger in the future :) . Generally I'm not a big fan of adding things to my rigs that have no resale value. Vehicles already depreciate too fast as it is and now you're going to drop $1500 and never see it again. Maybe in the future if you found the right buyer you can squeeze out a little extra but doubtful. If it tows just fine now I wouldn't even bother. If towing is a problem then I would consider selling it and considering something new.

3.73 in a 4 speed v10 are not that great. They really make the truck lugg around. My V10 with 3.73's gets 10-11 ish mpg. Many with 4.30's report in the 13's-15's mpgs. Never mind the truck really wakes up for towing.

I don't see where it is 2WD or 4WD. If 4WD that is a very fair price. I did a swap on an earlier truck and was very happy. You will certainly feel the diffeence. And that was only 373 to 410 as GM didn't use 430s in my application. I got better mileage towing because I was in the sweet spot much more of the time. If you plan to keep the truck I would do it. You can't trade for $1500.

I went from 3.73-4.30. Mich much better ratio. It will wake the truck up big time! Granted i'm towing 2k lbs more than you, but it makes a difference. My towing mileage went up approx. .5 mpg because it wasn't working as hard. Definitely worth the $$$. The price sounds right. Is that aluminum cover finned for cooling?

Best thing i could've done to the X! Aside from the hellwig rear sway bar!

I had the same question about my truck a couple weeks ago, if you can find it, there is a lot of information there to read as well as some good links. The post made me decide to go ahead with the change. I have found a full rear end in a junk yard for $100 and I will just swap it myself. I figure I can do it all for $300 if I do the labor, so kind of a no brainer for me.

If you do the change, let us know the results and what you think about them. I think my next truck will be a F-350 with a V-10, so I am interested in what your results will be.

Guys thanks for all the input, yes the truck is 4wd . Dodgeguy, yes aluminum finned for cooling.
I am not going to do it until I'm done for the season so I have some time to think about it. As far as getting my money back or mpg, well I bought a travel trailer so I already know what loosing money looks like.. Lol :)
