550 / 5500 insurance???

I have an 2023 F550 on order and realized I have read and heard some insurance companies will not cover them. All my insurance has been through USAA for a few decades. I contacted them today and they said their limit for GVWR they will cover is 14,000. So I'm already at their top limit with my current Chevy 3500 dually.

I've been meaning to shop insurance anyways so I guess this will be my catalyst to get moving on that. Any of you fellow 550 / 5500 crew have any suggestions on companies or willing to share what rates you pay to cover it?

For reference the plan is the F550 / CM flat bed and Stablecamper box setup with a Arctic Fox 1150.
  • I just went through that with my 2022 Ram 5500. My state registered it as a non commercial vehicle but USAA and State Farm would only cover it as a commercial truck since it had a flat bed. State farm was quite a bit cheaper but well over twice what I was paying for my F450.

    Hope this helps some.

I went with a CM SK bed and have been eyeing Stable Campers boxes as well. So far I really like the added storage.
  • My F450 GVWR is 14500. My insurance is State Farm. YMMV.
  • I converted my F250 State Farm policy over to my Ram 5500, but the price shot up 50% at renewal and they coverted it to a commercial policy written for exclusive use. I shopped the market and also found USAA would not insure but they sent me to Progressive Commercial where they were able to write up a personal use policy close to what my smaller Ford was costing me.
  • Interesting I started with USAA who covered my F450. They did the progressive quote but it was several hundred more than State Farm. It may vary from state to state.
  • I had state farm, but just went to Erie, half the cost. USAA told me no.
