I'd go Ford if looking at a gasser 3/4 ton+. Ford has the better trans gearing and has the power. 4.30's for sure. Seems like with the Ram or GM you're not getting the whole package. Why won't Ram fix the gearing in the tranny? GM please update your motor.

Agreed.

No point with anybody arguing with itguy08...just an irrational hater.

I have had both trucks and have towed my same trailer with both.

First had an 09 GMC 2500HD, 6.0 Vortec, CC, 4x4, 3.73 gears. It towed fine for what i needed.

Then went to an 08 GMC diesel, got rid of it after 1.5 years due to operating costs and was overkill for what i needed.

I now have a 14 Ram 2500HD, 6.4 Hemi, CC, 4x4, 3.73 gears. It seems to tow much better than the 6.0. the extra power is nice and i can actually comfortably use the cruise control.

If i were to purchase again, i'd definitely go with the Ram, but get the 4.10's.

Honestly, you cannot go wrong with either vehicle, just drive both and decide what you like best.

Everything I've read says the Ram with the 6.4 is a great work horse but the transmission gearing is not ideal, the GM with the 6.0 is solid, reliable but down on power compared to the Ram and Ford.

Give consideration to the Ford with the 6.2 as well, it has a fantastic transmission and the 6.2 is now comparable to the 6.4 output wise.

I never had issues with my 6.4 at the moderate altitudes (3,000-6,000 ft) that we have locally. It just powered up anything we pointed it at, at whatever speed we chose.

Moved on to a Cummins when we moved up to a large fiver, but for a gasser, I had no complaints with the 6.4. Though the transmission was not my favorite...

There is a reason GM sells more than Ram. Not to mention FCA is in dire financial straits with declining sales and looking for a buyer. Rumor has it the Chinese want part of it (Jeep) but that just puts them in even worse financial shape. And little product that people actually want.

I'd go with the GM over any junk from Ram any day. Matter of fact if it were walk or own a Ram, the Nikes would get a workout.

While the Ram may have more power, the transmission of the Chevy makes the 6.0 a better combination. The Ram 6.4 dogs in the hills at altitude. TFL video is true life. Good luck.

Total truck sales between GM and RAM are very close. Pretty sure that RAM actually outsells GM when you are looking at just the HD models. I'd bet money that they sell more in the 3500 market. But if that is your most important criteria, everyone should buy a Ford.

Actually it's not anywhere close...

Ford's my preference but GM makes nice trucks as well and I'd not have an issue owning one. Ram is not worth the steel it's made from. No Guts, No Glory, Ram.

FCA isn't going anywhere.

Really? Chrysler got bailed out TWICE by You and I. Their vehicles are the lowest quality money can buy. Sales are declining. Sergio is looking to sell off the company. I give them less than 5 years. Hopefully this time we will let them go the way of the DoDo bird where they belong.

How many of those are Canyon/Colorado? A market where RAM (and Ford) don't compete.

Why didn't you post the HD numbers? Because it doesn't support your bias?

I made the same decision a couple years back. I preferred the Ram interior, ride, and I could get the Ram a few grand cheaper. Plus the Ram dealers were willing to special order for me so I could get exactly what I wanted (4.10 and rear air bags). Chevy dealers only wanted to sell what was on their lots. Drive them both and decide that way, we all like different things.

In 2015 I test drove a Chevy 3500 6.0 and a RAM 2500 6.4 back to back. The RAM had much snappier acceleration for sure. It felt more like a sports car compared to the Chevy. It may be that Chevy has a lot of torque management in the computer. For various reasons we ended up purchasing the Chevy. It's a work truck with a tool bed and ladder racks on it now. I've got 41,000 miles on it. All of it hauling, some of it towing. The truck weighs 9,000 pounds on it's own. I had 10,000 pounds of trailer and blocks behind it and it was almost effortless. Towing the same 4,000 pound trailer loaded with a 9,000 pound excavator was the most I've had behind it. It was going up the mountain at 35 MPH with my foot on the floor but it did it and didn't get hot.
I have no regrets. I don't know if the RAM 6.4 would have been better or not.

I have a 2015 GMC 3500 with the 6.0 and it has been a nice truck. My only concern with the RAM 6.4 is the cylinder deactivation system, more to go wrong.
