Allison transmission whine, louder than usual.

I have a 2001 2500 HD 8.1 with the Allison 100,000 miles excellent condition. The tranny has always had a low whine but a few days ago pulled 8000 lbs. up a very steep gravel road that required using the four wheel drive for traction. This was about 1/4 of a mile. the tranny has been making a rather loud whine ever since. Could I be having a tranny oil pump issue.
  • It can be a pump. Mine has done that very thing before. As a precaution, change the spin on filter and top off with fluid. While you are at it, smell the fluid. Does it smell burnt? Is it still pink? The responses above are correct too, it could be the Tcase.
  • Make sure the transfer case isn't dry. They have a wear spot which will lead to a leak and eventual failure.
  • My guess is transfer case

When was the last time it was flushed?

Next to the tranny, so tough to tell which the noise is emanating from
  • Not in 4 wheel. Could only hear the whine in neutral but seems to have quit for now.
  • Make sure its out of 4 wheel drive? Mine is loud in 4 wheel drive.
