Aluminum repair more expensive than steel on vehicles

Interesting article.

The question of advantages/disadvantages regarding aluminum vehicle bodies is something that has been discussed previously.

After reading it, one concern that I have, was that if aluminum becomes the new material that most vehicles use, due to the need to reduce vehicle weight, in order to meet increasing federally mandated MPG requirements...can we expect an overall increase in personal insurance costs ?

On the other hand if aluminum does become the new material standard...industry wide...will aluminum repair technology evolve where new, cheaper, aluminum repair methods are developed ?

I don't know and I'm not sure anybody, including repair industry insiders, know at this point.

What are your thoughts ?
