Amber outdoor light fixture

OK, so this is odd. Our new trailer has both the amber outdoor light and the flood light. We normally will use (or did on our old camper) the amber light as a sort of "porch" light at night so no-one would goof with our site and stuff. I just noticed that where there used to be caulk/sealant around the fixture where it connects to the wall of the trailer, it appears melted and the caulk is missing (dripping), leaving about a 2 inch long, 1/16 inch wide, swath open to the elements. I turned on the light and rather soon it got extremely hot, so I am going to replace the light with an LED model (about the only non-LED light on the camper).

My question is if you all think I could get by using a clear silicone caulk or should I use something proprietary to the industry. It is a clear residue currently.

Thanks for the help.

I must have the same fixture from Command Electronics. My weather seal had completely deteriorated. I replaced it with foam weatherstripping. I also replaced the bulbs with LEDs: 1156 white LED for the white one and a 194 amber LED for the amber one. The light is much improved now.

    Cool, Good to know!

Forgive my ignorance, but why no silicone?

It doesn't stand up to the weather as well as things like proflex, or 3M, and, when you peel it off, it leaves a residue that the other caulks won't stick to.

Good info, I had no idea. Thanks.

  • In a pinch if its what you have it will work (silicone) I have used it up at the lake because thats all the lumber yard has.
