Does anyone just leave their anode out? It seems like it would be better not to have that thing disintegrating in the tank.

You cannot! Without the anode rod it would be your tank disintegrating. Leave it in, and replace it when it corrodes.

I leave mine out over the winter when the trailer is winterized. The rest of the time it is in place.
