Any of you run caps?

A lot of talk about tires on the TV section lately.

I bought some Bridgestones for my Dmax several years ago they are wearing just ok in my opinion. I will know more when they get down to the wear bars.

They have a super good casing on them. I mean like commercial quality. I have never really seen a casing like them except on big rigs.

I was kicking around the idea of getting them capped when they are worn out so I started to read about caps. We ran caps on our race car tires about 15 years ago. They were mandated by the track and I have to admit in all the years of running them and abusing them we never lost a cap and I never seen anybody loose cap while running them.

At first thought, I thought it was kind of a crazy idea running caps in this day and age on my TV. Then I started to read about caps and educate myself about them. Wow, I'm really starting to warm up to the idea now.

Any of you ever run caps on your tow vehicle or would you ever do it?

back in the 80's I worked for Saunders Leasing and we rented class 8 trucks. We hardly ever had a recap faliure that was not caused by something else. I had 2 class 8 tractors of my own and a Snap On tool truck in the late 80's. Ran caps on all drive tires and Never lost a cap. It was also against the law to run caps on steer axles back then.

How do they repair, or even permit repairs to, punctures in the sidewalls?

Honestly...that looks almost like a hit-n-run flame from someone who neglected/abused his tires. I have run Treadwrights for years...I ran right at the maximum capacity on both my trucks (rear tires at 80psi and right at-maybe a bit over-the maximum weight), my friend did the same on his motorhome, to say nothing of the abuse they see on wreckers. Never a problem!

I wouldn't run retreaded LT tires the casings aren't what they used to be 😞 .. the 550 will be getting a set BANDAG retread drives as 19.5 are expensive..new steers though.. I know someone who used to run retreads on the front of concrete trucks..no thanks..towel city tires.. WOW blast from the past.. we were going to have to run them at the dirt oval track used to race at...and were going to run them on the asphalt too, but couldn't afford to build enough engine to even keep up..

Hmm...you know, my Caddy needs new drag tires, the BFG Drag Dadials are pretty much done...and those look tempting...especially for the price!

Ya, that looks like a good deal to me. The only problem is I run a 15x15 and they don't have that size. 😞 But if you casing is good and they have your size I would cap them and go racing.

I'd have to assume possibly the guys with the "vintage" drag cars(meaning remakes of yesteryear). Us with modern day drag cars run GY, Phoenix, Hoosier or MT and possibly Toyo(not popular around here..they may not even make them any longer).

So yes I misspoke...and honestly didnt know anyone was capping drag slicks any longer

For me they would more than likely be somewhere around 5 years old. They would also be commercial "like" casings. They have way more weight then the cheap OEM tires that came off.

This information is not supplied. I have been doing extensive research on this topic for a few weeks and I am about to order a set of Treadwright Axiom's in 215/85r16 for my dually.

The casings are thoroughly inspected and any inperfections, punctures, etc, are repaired. The old tread is buffed off and the surface prepared for new tread. There is a bonding agent used between the casing and then new truck grade rubber applied. After that the tire is set aside for some curing time. Then the tire is put into the process to form the new tread, not sure what this step is called but they use pressure and heat to form the tread design and firmly form the tread to the casing.

As far as failures, gators on the road, etc. if you see bands or wires attached to the piece of tire it's NOT a recap failure. Recaps are only the tread. Heat kills tires. Under inflated, over loaded, mid matched sizes on dually tires. Etc.

Ill report back after they arrive if you all are interested.

Thanks!
