I actually succeed building something like that for my scuba compressor.
Used 2HP industrial motor and those really suck on start up.
So having 3000W Honda, I could start the motor alone, but not with the compressor inertia (no pressure) attached to it.
I made a clutch from V-belt where a lever would take the slag on or off. So after starting motor alone, I pull the lever and the compressor start pumping.
Goes to 3000 psi with no problem on the generator.
But this is not idiot-proof design you need for camper.
