Although I still have my 11.5 foot Bigfoot TC and often tow my Samurai, I now also have a great 19 foot Alpenlite. I have used it on several short trips, and honestly gotta say once at the campsite it is more comfortable than the Bigfoot. I use both with my 2004 Dodge DRW 4x4 Quad Cab. Although I really like the 5th wheel, I think maybe getting in and out of the bed of a TT might be more of an advantage than the manoeuvrability of the 5er. Old age changes priorities.
If it were my intent to part full time for long periods, I would consider keeping 3500 truck, 8' TC, and a TT Toy Hauler. Make the long haul with the entire setup, with the jeep in the TT Toy Hauler. After you setup, you could then either run the Jeep for short trips, or flat tow the Jeep behind the truck/TC for longer runs.
