Auxiliary fuel tank

Anybody have one in their bed? I hate stopping for fuel every 250-300 miles and dealing with gas stations that are less than RV friendly. Thinking of picking up a 60gallon or so tank to extend my range out to 800 miles or so and then I can fuel up on my terms. Just wondering what your experiences have been with them, or brands you may recommend.

On a separate note, I've had both rds and JME tanks. Both are great quality tanks.

You'll never save money with this and who cares cause once you're this old yer bladder don't last as long as a tank of fuel anyway......plus yer little sh t eater dog will tear up the upholstery if you don't walk him every 2 hours.........so a transfer tank is a total waste!

I also have the 60 gallon RDS tool box/aux tank combo. Had it since I bought the truck new. I am very happy that I can choose when to stop for fuel instead of needing to stop.

I am surprised that no one has come in and said "you won't save money with it" yet. Or "I need to stop every 200 miles to walk the dog, got to the bathroom...". That isn't what it is about for me. It is about being able to stop where I want to stop instead of in a truck stop.

This is my second truck with an RDS gravity feed setup. Very satisfied. Even my wife says it's the best addition we've made to the trucks..

We winter in Casa Grande Az so after we bought our 05 truck in Tempe Az we had KSH in Lake Halva sue make a custom fit inbed tank between the front tool box and our awesome air hitch. 55 gals. Best to do when the truck is new we felt.

To switch tanks it is a toggle switch.

Put a RDS model 71083 45 gallon tank in the bed of my truck about 4 years ago. Have had no problems with it and will move it to a new truck when DW lets me get one. It's gravity fed with no problem of over filling. It is about 10" wide. However it does stick a couple of inches higher than the top of the truck bed. Love the fact I don't have to get fuel when dragging the 5th wheel. Cost at Union Hydro for the tank is $387 plus the installation kit of around $56.00.

Peggy bought me a 36 gallon tank from Tractor Supply, and a filler pump/nozzle off Craigslist for Christmas a couple years ago. I absolutely love it. It gives me a total of 72-75 gallons, which translates to once-a-day fillups. I usually fill up at the end of the day when I'm unhooked from the toyhauler. We also have the option of stopping at rest stops instead of fuel stations. It's most definitely a win-win situation.

Just be aware that a very large fuel tank adds a lot of weight to your truck.

We have a 100 gallon TransferFlow in the bed of our truck. We can travel over 1200 miles towing or around 1800 not towing. Nice filling up when we find low priced diesel. $1.69 a gallon at one station in our area.

We also have the 51 gallon RDS for diesel. Install is not difficult. I have had my current tank in my last two trucks. Good luck.

RDS is my preferred brand. Northern Tool carries them. My Ford dealers installed the two I've had. As others have mentioned, gravity feed is good with me. I have a ball valve in the line in case I want to shut it off.

I usually go big. I've had the 90 gallon models with a tool box on top. It works great and the tool box lid locks. RDS is offering multiple sizes now on the same capacities. I used to have a 90 gallon that sat flush with the top of the bed. Now I have a 90 gallon model that sits about 3" higher than the bed but takes up less bed space.

Only negative is they aren't true to their claimed capacity. No matter what I try, I can only get around 85 gallons in my 90 gallon tank. But with my stock tank, that gives me a good 120 gallons of diesel. I could almost pull the camper to Disney and back with that much fuel. Without any load and I could probably make it to Las Vegas.

Yep, have a 50 gallon RDS tool box/aux tank combo with gravity feed. Have an 800 mile range now versus the 300 I used to. Found mine on CL for $300, but took about 2 months of searching and being patient.

I have a 63 gal RDS tank in my bed with gravity feed and like it very much. That gives me a total of 98 gal. That gives me a range of 800+ miles while towing my 5th wheel.

Diesel right?
Was just looking at an Al one the other day. Looked like the type with a gravity drain to the main tank. Very simple setup and looked easy to install. But the guy had spilled diesel while filling it and the whole area stank of it.

I've had one in my trucks since 1983 - as a matter of fact, I'm still using the same tank. It was made by out local tank and welding shop. I did sand it down and repaint it to match the current truck. Between the two tanks I have 140+ gallons.

I prefer to have a separate pump and extra filters on the tank as I use it to haul fuel for my equipment.
