This is what we usually do. Makes it stronger as well. However, if you don't want to "carport it". Pool noodles cut, and slipped onto the awning rails cushion the bump very well.

I use two strips of yellow ribbon on each arm. If I’m careful the ribbons will fold into the arms when retracting.

After several years of full timing, I never learned to duck.

Hitting the awning draws profanity, the pin box draws blood....

We hang one of these on each arm. It has saved many headaches,bumps and bruises.

I am happy to be able to say I've never walked into the awning supports. They are definitely in the way though. Using the awning in car port model (like wildtoad mentioned) does make them more visible.

Just a FYI...do not change to a FW trailer, those awning arms are soft, compared to a pin box.

We also hung something on it to catch your attention. We do the same for tent guidelines to prevent tripping. Our current awning arms are up so high there is no chance of hitting it unless you are 10 foot tall.
