Back-up Camera Recommendations?

I'm not sure if this belongs in this forum, but I'm starting here. If it needs to be moved to another forum, please do so.

I am interested in giving my husband a back-up camera for Christmas and am wondering if anyone here uses one or has a recommendation as to what would be a good one to look at. I think I'd like a two-camera system -- one for the back of the truck for hitching and one for the back of the trailer. Trailer is camera ready. Not sure whether to look at wired or wireless.

I recommend a HARDWIRED system for mounting on the rear of your camper. The wireless signal has too far to go and a lot of potential for interference going from the back of the trailer to the front of the truck.

For the truck, you have a lot more options. You can see if your make/model has an option for a factory system. My Tundra didn't have the factory system, but I bought a Rostra aftermarket system that connected to my prewired truck. Worked great.

My Ram had the factory system, works great.

A quality wireless system with its own dedicated screen is a simple, inexpensive option that will work well for the truck, with minimal distance and interference between camera and monitor.

Another option is something like the iBall system. That is a temporary magnetic mount camera system, not meant to be left on the truck full time.

Bought a complete system on amazon for $50. I mounted the camera on the rear ladder, powered it off a running light, ran shielded cable to the front of the trailer underneath and mounted the transmitter behind the fibreglass nose, also using power from a running light. That way the transmitter on the trailer is as close to the receiver in the truck as possible. It means I have to drive with the parking lights turned on, no big deal. I have the screen fastened to my rear view mirror. Works well.

I would rather a wired system, much more solid signal and no interference. I use a wireless system but from the back of the truck, when I use it from the back of the trailer to back into my carport it is not 100% solid signal. 🙂

I have a Furrion back up cam and I'm not too happy with it. My trailer came with a Furrion camera mount pre-installed so went with that unit for nearly $400. The screen is very small and the resolution is low so the images aren't very clear. I hardly turn it on anymore...a waste of money.

The signal on wireless systems generally are marginal from the rear of the trailer to the tow vehicle dash. I helped a buddy install his and even moving the transmitter closer to the front of the trailer didn't help enough. He now has a wired system. Perhaps others have a better wireless solution. I have not seen such. It would be great to find a wireless system that can penetrate the trailer and metal of the tow vehicle at 50 feet.
