Back-up cams

I have been reviewing many of the posts about the new wireless cams. As I have learned they all require power to fire up the camera and many have hooked them the the clearance lights...this is a good idea..you want cam turn on lights...VOILA!!!

Now here's another thought...my Lance was prewired for a wired back up cam system, which I know is not what the new technology is today. I can see using it not just for backing up but for passing other vehicles and just to make sure the boat is doing fine and also hooking up to the trailer single handed. Don't really want it on all the time.

So two ways to look at it: (I bet there will be more posting about that) 1. Find a wired system and install it, don't really fancy all the wire work in the truck to do this, but it can be done. I assume the viewer head would control the cam on-off function. 2. Use the wire harness to supply power to the cam, but then how do I turn it on and off from the cab?

Other thoughtful and provocative suggestions always welcome.

I got one of these at a garage sale for $10. Works great on batteries and even has audio both directions. I can have my wife hold it and point it as I back up, and we can converse. It also has pan/tilt built in. I fix it to the camper with velcro when I go on trips.

Does anyone have a wireless camera/monitor setup that can permit the driver to observe the stability of cargo (such as motorcycles) in an enclosed trailer while driving?

With the multi view screens it would be really nice to have a cam at the hitch as show previously and one up high for looking back. You might ask why low and high, you can hook up trailer with high one...In my case I have a box on back the over hangs the hitch so would not be able to see it...shoot it might be fun to have the two side cams also for blind spot..now that is a bit much! But a hi-lo would be really useful. Some really good ideas here, THX!!!
My monitor has provisions for two cameras. Push one button to select which camera. The cheapo ($25 on sale) Harbor Freight works great for a hitch camera. Not so good for other applications. I did use it for a blind spot on the passenger side for a while. With a simple switch, you could have several cameras with my monitor.

$200 for this set up. Very nice, especially for the $$$

Thanks! I know I may sound wishy washy, but now THAT'S the one I will buy! I like the options it has that others don't. I've also heard a few others on this board mention it. Come pay day October 1st! 🙂

The one I think I'll buy..

I like this and think it would be perfect for my use. I mainly want it when backing up my driveway and under the RV port. My drive is 175' long curving, uphill. and narrow. That and the RV port are a tight "blind spot" fit! I have to get out and look a good 6-8 times every time I come home from a trip. Of course the advantages of always having it won't be lost on me either!

Thanks for the link Reddog1..

Dakota98 - That looks great for hooking up your trailer. Pretty hard to miss.

This is what I have & it works for me. I painted the lip of the TT tongue bright yellow, it helps.

A basic rule of thumb for a "wireless" system is the closer the transmitter is to the monitor, the less chance for any interference. My Yada operates on 2.4GHz frequency. About the only time you will experience interference / picture quality is when you're in proximity of other devices operating on a same frequency. I eliminated interference completely by locating my transmitter closer to the monitor, even when I'm in my driveway at home.

PS: My Yada also has night vision, It's clear as day, even at night.

I looked this up but it says the camera mounts above the license plate. Mine is on the left of the bumper. How did you mount yours, and where? I thought the best place would be above the camper door directed down?..

Dak

This camera can be mounted anywhere, it just so happens that it's primary mounting position can be the license plate bracket. I own a TT & not a cab-over. The mounting bracket will accommodate any mounting. The camera bracket also has 3-ratchet type locking positions. I agree with reddog1. You should look around, there are many different options.

You would do yourself a disservice by going with what one of us have, without speaking to a distributor first. You can buy a kit, but there are many different cameras, depending on your needs/wants. I think the view angle is very important. To my knowledge none do it all. The technology changes often. I am totally satisfied with my camera, but do not think I would be had I followed my research instead of the camera tech/salesman. They sell many cameras, so they will have what you want, just need to know what it is. These guys are easy to talk to, and many RV.NET members in all forums have purchased from them for years. I have never heard a bad word.

RV Cams

I think this is what I have 7" Color System with Audio and IR Night Vision Code: 70-CHNV. I have more than 30 feet of night vision. My camera is Color. I also bought the 25-foot Extension Cable for $10. It allows me to disconnect the cable between the truck and TC. A second 25-foot Extension Cable would make it very easy to move the monitor inside the TC, so you can use the camera as a security camera.

Just for giggles, I was messing with a Harbor Freight camera, and it works fine with my setup. The picture is not as good a quality, but acceptable for day time.

We have used our wired system since the TC was new in 2005. It is always on when underway. No more blind spots, it has never failed and is very useful after dark also. We would not be with out it! Highly recommended................
