In as much as I have a new one (2014-15), my battery(s) are under the front inside kickup where the FW tank and electricals are from the factory.
That little 'cubby' is called a wheelhouse access door and is really meant for storing items between the side of thew truck bed and the camper, I store my chainsaw and shovel in there and my chainswaw gas and oil in Rotapax containers (no leak, no fumes).
Never knew the battery on earlier Palomino's were outside, news to me.
Mine came with a single Group 24 in a plastic battery box which I canned and built a new one from 3/4" plywood with foam seals and vents and installed 2 group 24 deep cycle batteries wired in parallel. My opinion is, one battery isn't sufficient in any TC.
