Bearing Seals

I'm about to repack the bearings on our Rockwood 8318SS and I have a question.

In the past I have just bought new seals locally and they were
"matched up" by size at the store.

The seals are quite a bit cheaper at etrailer.com and they have standard lip seals and double-lip seals. I'm not sure which I have now on the trailer. Their web site says double-lip seals are better for boat trailers and help to keep water out better. Is it OK to use double-lip seals on my Rockwood? They only cost a little more money an if they are better I will get them. Are there any disadvantages to the double-lip seals? Will they seal properly on axle that didn't come with double-lip seals?

Thanks
Steve
  • Thanks, everyone for the fast responses.

I am now going to order the double-lip seals from etrailer.

  • The double-lipped seals are used on the E-Z Lube axles to help keep grease out of the brake drum.
  • Either one will work. The doudle-lip that is used on boat trailers are designed to keep lake water from being sucked into the bearings when submerged.
