I guess I spent too many years in the electrical industry and have seen way too many devices of all types that were hit with power surges or lightning strikes. Some of the devices suffered non-passive failure. I would rather this type of failure be outside not inside my RV. YMMV

But I am a big believer in my PT50C and absolutely will never plug in anywhere without it. I'm such a fan I actually have two. One that I have been using for the past 5+ years (full time) and a spare still in the box. Well worth the peace of mind for me.

For those who hard-wire it.
Im thinking of being on the road away from any type of repair services .
What would happen if the unit burns out or suffers damage and will not function anymore ?
Is there a way to be able to power up the rv ?

Isn't it easier to just unplug an in-line unit rather than re-wire a hard-wired unit ? OR am I thinking this out all wrong ?

I installed the Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C. There is a good instructional video at www.progressiveindustries.net.
I mounted the remote display near the power panel on an inside wall so I could fish the data wire to it. At the same time I mounted a DC voltage display I found on Amazon.
Now I can see the incoming voltage, current draw, and any problems at a glance. I wired the DC meter to a DC circuit in the power panel and can see the charger/battery voltage as well.

Have had my Surge Gard portable for 3.5 years and has saved things several times a year....I like it as can use it in other circuits besides RV, for me the Voltage/amp readout is a must....good luck

Works great and has a remote read out that gives current voltage, amperage, cycle and any errors. It has a built in delay when turned on to allow any air conditioner to release the high pressure side before turning back on.

DITTO.

I have the same in my truck camper, along with the remote. awesome unit, except it errors out when I plug in my portable generator, so I have to turn off the switch on the remote.

There are 2 popular brands of surge protectors: Surge Guard, and Progressive Industries.

Both companies also provide 2 basic types of protectors: portable - in line, and permanently mounted.

The in-line will have plugs at both ends of the protector. You plug it in somewhere between the electric source and your power supply in the camper.

The permanent ones are hard-wired into your camper, somewhere between the outside plug and the power supply in your camper.

I think the biggest difference between Progressive Industries and Surge Guard is, Progressive Industries provides a life-time warranty. Surge Guard does not.

I have had both. My first was a Surge Guard. It lasted a little over a year and then bit the dust. Don't know if a spike took it out or what, but it DID do it's job. It was an in-line model.

So went with a Progressive Industries second time round. But it was an in-line also, and ... somehow it came up missing. To this day, I still have no clue what happened to it. It just disappeared! Really.

So my 3rd one is another progressive, in-line, with plugs on both ends. But ths time, I installed it inside the camper. I cut the 35 foot electric cord and installed a new male plug. I then could plug in the surge protector, located inside the camper, and simply push the male end out the original hole in the side of the camper. I then use an external cord and plug into power. I also kept the original 35 foot cord (although a couple feet shorter now), and put a new plug on the end, and now have the original cord as a spare.

The advantage of doing this is, #1, will never loose the surge protector again as it's inside the camper. #2, if it blows again, it's just a matter of un-plugging and plugging in the original wire, or a different wire. #3. If I ever sell the camper, I can take the protector with ME. It won't be sold with the camper.

Here's how it came out. And it works great this way:

And its all tucked way behind the bottom panel in this cabinet. I added a door on hinges for easier access:

Progressive Industries hardwired EMS. For all the reasons posted above, they're that good.

Progressive Industries lifetime warranty trumps all.
Get the full power protection.

Just last weekend my PI EMS would not allow power due to reverse polarity.
With no fix from management I just used the 50a and my adapter.

Search this Forum for `surge protector' and read on. To minimize the results search the results for manufacturers like `Progressive', etc.I would encourage you to hard wire the unit for convenience and to avoid having it get lost. Mine is right next to the main A/C circuit breaker box.
