Black tank small leak??

We are new to the pull-behinds. We have been weekend camping and dumping at the CG before towing home.

A few times now, when taking off the cap to add the rhino dump hose, some of the "black" water empties, as if it is sitting in the tubing. I know it is the black water because my little pod I throw in has blue dye and smells somewhat better.

This past time, we made sure both knobs (black and gray tanks) were pushed completely in and STILL some black water came out, maybe about a quart or so.

This is a 2005 Adirondeck. Anyone have any ideas on what is happening and/or how to correct it?

Thanks!
  • Get a bottle brush, open the valve blade and clean around the opening of the black and gray tank. Stuff gets stuck around the rim the blade sits in and the blade doesn't completely close.

BTW: Dump your tanks FIRST before attempting this!:B
  • I recently had the same problem, where as poo water was leaking past the valve (3 month old trailer). I could not get the valve to close 100%, therefore allowing liquid to pass into the drain pipe. I figured something was lodged in the valve seat. After countless times off back flushing and filling and dumping the black tank the valve still leaked. I ended up removing the valve and found a cloth baby wipe lodged into the valve seat. After removing the wipe from the seat with a screwdriver, I reassembled the vale and has not leaked since.
Lesson learned: no more baby wipes in the toilet. This was a big job, as I had to cut a hole in the underbelly material to access the valve. Once all was back together, I scored a 2.5' x 2.5' piece of black coroplast material from a local sign shop and now have a nice access panel for future valve repairs.

  • Without any scientific evidence at all, I believe that's just residual water left in the pipes after dumping. For whatever reason, it didn't make it to the stinky slinky during the dump process but during the drive it migrated to the end of the pipe.

Google search for Valterra twist-on valve. It attaches to the end of your sewer pipe and adds an extra valve. You can hook up your hose before opening this valve so nothing spills on the ground or your shoes. Although some worry about this valve vibrating off during normal driving conditions, mine has been on the 5er for several years of fulltiming without glue and has never come off.
  • All of my RVs have always had a small amount of liquid come out when I take off the sewer cap. I just hold the sewer hose below the opening as I take the cap off to catch the fluid. Then I lock on the sewer hose.
  • might clean the O ring area inside the valve take a flashlight and you can see it, some times just a good hose spraying will clean it off. yea some body has too do it.
