Blocking window light and heat ?

Go to the Lowe's or any other home store for the silver shade, it comes in rolls. DH cut the shade material out to fit the windows.

I like others use the reflectix, bought a roll from Home Depot or Lowes and cut it to fit behind the blinds and valances on each window. Dining table window was larger, so I just carefully pieced two pieces together with clear packing tape. You can hardly see the seam. I use them to help keep the heat or cold out, but love them for their room darkening ability. These pieces have the TT so dark, I actually sleep later than I do in the house.

I'm guessing that the OP has the same blinds in their bedroom as our KZ. They just don't do a very good job of darkening the room.

Like others here, we went to HD and bought that roll of bubble foil insulation. It just slides under the curtains when needed and really worked while we were in Sacramento heat. Cut it to fit then when not in use, store behind the sofa.
When the rig is stored, we glued the foil onto a piece of cut to fit heavy cardboard, painted the cardboard white and put that in the window. The curtains don't get faded, and it looks pretty good to the neighbor. The only drawback is that the rig is dark inside.
These things work well when cold also.

We have day/night shades and we find pulling both shades really darkens the room. In fact we hardly use the night part as it gets too dark. I think your KZ should have them also.

I bought some bubble wrap insulation that has aluminum on both sides. It comes in rolls of various sizes, then you cut to the shape you need. Blocks all the light and is a much better insulator than any of the ideas above IMO.

Wife likes it dark at night so she made some Velcro tabbed black curtains that slide up under the valance. We put some 1"x1" Velcro behind the valance. Takes about 20 sec to attach one. I also painted the underside of the bedroom vent black. Use some clear 1st, then black over that. The vent really lets in very little light anyway. Now it's pitch black in there.

One less thing for us to deal with....we can sleep most anywhere with any amount of light.

We're going to install black blinds in our bedroom one of these days. The up/down pleated blinds just don't cut it for room darkening. We also have an outside door in our bedroom and it has no covering over the glass so when the sun comes up, it can be like a searchlight in our eyes. The only problem with the door is how to mount it and what to do for a valence. Installed a black Maxxis vent cover for the bedroom fan which helps a lot.

Try this one too. They have a thin 1/2" micro blind that is thin enough to also fit between a screen door and the the door glass. Justblinds.com

Until I get around to installing new blinds, I've been using pieces of cardboard over the windows that I scored from the cg dumpster. Night and day difference.... ;)

I got some static cling window tint in about 5% darkness and cut that to size for the windows I wanted blocked. It really cut down on light, didn't look tacky from inside or out and was super easily to remove. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Auto-Expressions-Insta-Cling-Window-Tint-Extra-Dark-5/16672493

Once we had our daughter, we needed a way to completely black out the windows during afternoon nap time. We bought Reflectix and cut to slightly oversized for the windows and bought some Velcro buttons (pieces of Velcro about the size of a quarter) and attached the Reflectix via Velcro. The Reflectix completely eliminates all the light intrusion, which certainly helps with summer heat gain. With the dark tint on the outside windows, you don't even see the Reflectix from outside.
