can i wire the furnace to run with out the a/c unit wired in

Is the control box ripped out? I think it is the two blue wires or white with blue stripe to twist together and the furnace will run. Possibly go down to a hardware store and get a heat only thermostat to control the heat function.

On his DuoTherm, the thermostat controls the air conditioner, which controls the furnace.
There’s no way for his thermostat to directly work the furnace.

What he said. Identify the two wires from the furnace, hook them to two wires of your choice in the wall t-stat wires, then get a simple furnace only t-stat and hook it up.

Won't you eventually replace the A/C? If so, just do it right...and once.

You would probably have to use a separate thermostat and you would need the interface wiring for the furnace so you would know which wires are which.
