we decided that we do need a new tow vehicle it's just not comfortable with the one we have And towing our new unit...I have been unable to locate anywhere a used DRW 3500 Ram with 373 gears and aisin tranny...decided that we would go new but all I can find is 342 gears ....what gives if they're selling them then they must be able to tow with them...why are they frowned upon ....just talked with a dealership on the phone who said that the 342's have a 23,000 pound towing capacity in the Longhorn...25,000 with the 373 ...will,the 342 work for me...just want to get everybody else's opinion it's a big investment to make a mistake ..thanks

Just went and sat with the Dodge dealership local and they found a truck in New York got the price down to 60,000 it's a lariat with 410s which well we probably don't need...has pretty much everything in it except the runningboards would have to add thatstill still a lot more than I really wanted to pay....but I'm not ruling it out at this point any thoughts,,if I could figure out how to post a picture of the specs I would but I don't know how

One of the benefits of wider ratio transmissions and many gears is they negate the requirement for multiple rear axle ratios.

1st gear example Old 4spd

Dodge 48RE 2.45 x 3.73 = 9.13 ; 2.45 x 4.10 = 10.045 ; 2.45 x 4.56 = 11.72

Ford 4R100 2.71 x 3.73 = 10.10 ; 2.71 x 4.10 = 11.11 ; 2.71 x 4.56 = 12.36

GM 4L80E 2.48 so similar to Dodge

New 6spd

Dodge Aisin 3.75 x 3.42 = 12.825 ; 3.75 x 3.73 = 13.99

Ford 6R140 3.97 x 3.42 = 13.58 ; 3.97 x 3.73 = 14.81

So you can see, even with a 3.42, the new 6spds have deeper gears than the old 4spds did even with 4.56!! The other aspect I love about the Ford 6sp is 4th is not 1:1, but 1.15:1 effectively making towing in direct like if you had a lower rear end turning that 3.42 into a 3.93

The 6r75 in my Expy is 4.17:1 1st and has 3.73 (standard on the EL) for a 1st gear crawl ratio of 15.55. It shifts out of 1st at 15mph. I love it! No worry about stalling going up a steep hill!

I have had Ram's with 3:73 and 4:10 which I have now. See my sig. I guess it is what you want to tow and where you tow. We are full timers and travel all over the country. My 4:10 sure is nice when I am climbing the mountains. Don't notice any difference then when I had a 3:73 and towed a lighter fiver. I tow heavy and would never have a 3:42. As far as trucks go on the computer they are all over.

Gears can always be changed if you really find out that you're unhappy with 3.42.

You might want to compare pricing with out of state high volume dealerships such as this one.. With a suggested MSRP of $60,000+ they will sell this dually diesel for only $46,000.

I googled to find this one, it only took me a couple of minutes.

Dually truck

Call them, they have 99 Ram trucks in stock. They will offer a great price, because they know you will have to buy airline tickets to come get it. And unless they can sell you a truck that is $3,000 less than your local dealership, you would not want to pay for airline tickets, and hotels to come get it from the west coast.

With this great price in hand, you probably can get your local dealership to admit they buy the trucks with a $60,000 MSRP for about $45,000 and the rest is mark up. They can sell a truck for much less than the MSRP, but normally they do not.

Good luck,

Fred.

They'll actually sell that truck for $48.8k. The as low as price includes every possible rebate and they're mostly very obscure, so few qualify for lower than the sale price. Which still the best price I was able to find, including the quote I got from Dave Smith (by a lot).

Like others have said, the Aisin transmission is geared so low, taller rear end gears work out well. My 4500 had 4.30 gears with the Aisin, and 1st was so low, I actually wished it had an option to lock it out!

You might also take a look at Dave Smith Motors in Idaho. I don't have a link, but they are, I believe, the largest Ram seller in the country. Or, take a look, as noted above, at the GM line. All their diesels come with a 3.73 rear end and a Allison automatic.
