Carlisle Radial Trail RH

After reading this thread, I went out and checked my tires. Discount put on HD's instead of the RH's for the same price. That was in April. No problems. They still smell new, I love that. From what I've read here, I'm a happy camper.

Just put a set of the radial trail HD on. I stepped up to the 225/75/15 load range E. Nice looking tire, a lot more tread than previous marathons. At 36 lbs a piece they are substantially heavier than the earlier ones. I am going on a 3500 mile trip in a little over a week from now, so I will update how they did when I get back.

I know - the RHs haven't been around that long-but that doesn't stop some of this board........

On subject-I put a set on in Florida-ran the RHs all the up to Maine and back out to Utah and they are still on the trailer.

I had two 225/75 15D Marathons suffer road hazards in the Florida panhandle in 2001 on our '99 Jayco 293RKS 5th wheel. The nearest tire shop only had Carlisles. I opted for a set of E rated radial trail RH of the same size. I got seven years out of that set. I kept them aired to 75psi. I'd buy another set without hesitation.

Well, After two flats, a blowout and a tread separation which was ready to blow (found when getting four new tires) I got rid of my 2 yr old Carlisle RH's. These were true to the name "China Bomb". No problems for a year, and about 5,000 miles, but then this summer, nothing but grief. The blowout took my fender, and was in 105* heat in the middle of Nowhere with no cell service just after my wingman passed me and kept going.

I run 215/75 R14's so no D range tires available for me. Went with the HD's this time. I could feel immediately leaving discount tire and driving around the lot and entering the freeway, that these are stiffer and more stable. Hopefully I will get 2+ years out of these. The RH's felt like jello.

Let's hope these are the real deal. I had a motorhome before with 16's and ran Michelin LTX's with load range E. WIsh I could get them in 14's. Can't go larger or my tires would rub together.

I make sure my trailer is properly jacked, and they have no problem with me watching.

If I couldn't watch they wouldn't do it.

I take my wheels off and bring them in. I do this for some of my cars, too. Lots less hassle for the shop folks. I think they appreciate that.

My price schedule is as follows--Stay back or carry materials and tools-Standard price. Watching intensely or close to the work--Double Standard price. Trying to help-Triple Standard price.

Would you trust Discount Tire to jack up your TT or would you take off yourself and take the wheels/tires in for mounting? A PITA but with the younger folks DT hires, just wondering if they know how to properly jack up a TT? I asked if I could watch but was told their insurance forbids customers in their bays.

Since I started this thread I've only put around 500 miles on them so I can't really give any kind of review. We do have roughly 2,000 additional miles planned this year though so I'll follow up in the fall.
The Maxxis is a great tire, I've had them myself. Honestly, from what I've read I doubt there's much difference between the two. The higher speed rating is a lot of extra piece of mind for me. That, and the availability over the Maxxis helped too. There was little difference in price so that didn't factor in my decision.
I looked at the new tires once unmounted compared to the old Towstars and the difference was HUGE in weight and overall feel. Granted the old tires were 8 ply and I went to a 10 but the Towstars were VERY soft.
Also people (myself included) have had issues when buying Maxxis with as much a year old date code at time of purchase. To some that's not and issue but you lost a year of your warranty. The Carlisle's I bought were three months old the day I bought them.

I wasn't aware of these new HD Carlisles til the am tire Mgr offered them as an alternative and told me they had them in stock in Boise now. Upon reading this thread and a little more online, maybe the Carlisles are okay.
Their image has certainly taken a bad beating in online forums. Maybe they're trying to reinvent themselves?
What think? Let them swap the Carlisle HD 81mph rated for maxxis 65mph? Hmmm,

The Carlisle radial trail RH is a huge improvement over previous Carlisle ST tires. Granted they haven't been out long enough to see how they do in 5-7 years or how many miles they can last.

Carlisle says the HD is improved over the RH. If I was looking at a 15"/16" ST tire it would be a Carlisle HD or the Provider by Taskmaster which has a good reputation with commercial trailers owners.
Some thing to consider is not all sizes of Maxxis ST8008 have the added nylon tread belt. Maxxis doesn't advertise which sizes don't.

When shopping tires for a trailer expand your knowledge and google all type of trailering websites ....not just a couple of RV websites. They all have some thing to offer.
