Changing prewired antenna cable

While trying to trouble shoot my TV problem, I found the problem when I found a bullet hole in the mast used to raise the antenna. I feel I should replace the whole cable and not splice together. Has anyone had to do this task. Is the cable fed through a conduit which would aid in the process... The unit is a 2005 981 Max...
  • Before replacing, it would do you well to test the wire to see if it works OK or not. Why replace the whole thing if it still works.

I can almost guarantee the wire in not in any kind of a conduit. If you attach a connector to the old wire and the other end to the new wire, you (might) be able to pull the wire through. But if the wire goes through any turns, the connector will catch and then you're just out of luck.

If the bullet hit the wire at the connection by the antenna, and the wire is except for that spot, you're much better off just replacing the end.
  • I would guess that they did not use conduit. I would try to put male/female fittings on the cable and join them that way. if unsuccessful you could always try to replace the whole cable.

  • They don't use conduit. Splicing it is a SUPER easy task. There are two main kinds of coax, RG58 and RG6. If you go to Radio Shack, they have both kinds of ends, crimp tool, and "barrel connector". Just buy both RG6 and RG58 ends, you'll know which one fits when you try it. The barrel connector is the female to female screw on connector that does the actual splice.

You simple cut the the wire, strip it back to expose the copper center, put on a male connector, then crimp it on. Do the same to the other end of the cut. Now you have two male ends that you join with the barrel connector. Now wrap the whole thing with electrical tape to keep the elements out.

You're done. 5 minutes, less than one can of beer. And yes, if your DW asks, you did it the right way. This really is the right way to splice coax.
  • Want to thank the folks that offered the suggestions on my antenna wire issue... I ended up taking the easy way out and spliced the cable and it is working fine... since I did it, it may not last that long but at least I will be better at splicing... Since I've had a trial run....
