Checking a distributor

I posted earlier about my truck going through distributor caps. Well This one lasted about three weeks and the truck died on the highway. Can't see anything wrong with the cap, but I installed a used one to try it and the truck fired right up. I now changed the coil, ignition module and pick up coil. New wires and plugs going in tomorrow. What is the best way to check the distributor for wear without removing it ?

I was thinking about getting a new one. I pulled it and checked the end play and it is .060. I was trying to find a spec and came up with .020 to .040. There is nothing to rebuild on these distributors except bushings and end play. I can get shims and shim it myself if I know for sure what the spec is.

Remove it, take it to a speed shop and have them rebuild it. Best money you will ever spend. Either that or buy a brand new one and be done with it.
