Is anyone using a chevy or gmc SRW or DRW with the 6.0L with any of
the single or double slide truck campers that are out there.

The Lance and Palomino double slides push 3700 lbs. even over 4000
considering the Lance 1172.

Bottom line are these dually only diesel only once you get to 3700 and over?

I have a Duramax and a 6.0...the 6.0 will haul a TC no problem. But if you start towing heavy the diesel shines....just get the 4/10 gear in the 6.0 you will be fine..the 6.0 is the best gas motor currently on the market in heavy duty trucks

Errr, 'scuse me. The Chevy Silverado 6.0L crew cab in LT trim has a payload of 4300# with SRW and 6450# as a DRW.

Let's say 3700# empty truck weight on rear axle then 4300# payload for a total of 8000# on two rear wheels meaning a minimum tire rating of 4000#? Maybe so, but I have yet to actually see it anywhere on a stock PU. How about providing a stock tire manufacture name, size, and tire rating that supports over 4k#

You're a bit high on the empty rear axle weight plus many campers add some to the front axle. I don't know about the newest models but my '05 is about 3k on the rear.

I have a Ford DRW CC 6.2 hauling an AF1150. Together fully loaded we weigh around 13,700 lbs. To put that in perspective Ford rates my towing capacity at 15,500 lbs and my CVWR at 22,500 lbs.

This means I am far below what Ford feels the engine can pull up ( and down) a hill. Needless to say, the engine and transmission handles the weight without difficulty and I have found I can climb (and accelerate) up any Mountain pass at whatever speed I choose.

Another advantage is that the gas engine puts me below the 14,000 lb GVWR. The diesel would have put me about 650 lbs over.

I would expect the Chevy 6.0 would also perform more than adequately.

My truck in signature below has a 3900 lb payload. While I realize I don't have a TC the 6.0 handles my fiver Ok. Keep in mind If I full timed, a Dmax would be on my short list but works good for me. I recommend 4:10 axle and likely would be a factory order with the 6.0. You would be hard pressed to find a 4:10 with 6.0 1 ton on a dealer lot.
I believe you will want DRW with TC over 3k.

You should be fine. I've carried one of my campers weighing around 3000# and 4 people on a f150 From Okla to the west coast and back. But I wont do that again. 🙂

The 1172 is going to be VERY far over 4000#.

However, keep in mind that the NNBS 6.0L Chevys have 6 speed transmissions which make for a much more relaxed ride than the older 4 speed trans. And the 6 speed seems to find better gearing for most situations.

With GM and I believe Ford trucks if you look at 2011 models and newer you will get a much higher payload than before that date whether it gas or diesel. I don't know what year Dodge raised its payload.

That said, is there a "best year" for the 6.0L vortec? It seems to me it would pay to go new enough to get the 6 spd trans.

Thanks. I currently have a 96 with the 5.7 vortec and numerous bolt on performance modifications and it does fine with our Lance 835. Absolutely smooth sailing. But, the 96 is a 2 door model extended cab and as we get older it gets to be a pain and a newer truck with rear doors (whether xcab or crew) would be easier on our backs for making use of the rear seat for carrying those things we like to have in the cab of the truck, to say nothing of being able to take our grand kids with us!

The 6.0L engine is more then enough power for hauling any TC in both SRW or DRW trucks. My neighbor pulls a 5vr that weighs about 10k with his 3500 SRW 6.0L.

Now if you're considering a 4000# TC I would be looking seriously at a DRW truck.
