dc to ac converter

looking for a dc to ac converter that will give me 550 watts at 4.5 amps. will be used in my tow vehicle and van to power my oxygen generator. Any help appreciated.
  • What you want is an "INVERTER"
Many units available you should get one around 600 watts or slightly higher. continuous. I would not go over 1000 watts.
  • Assuming you are speaking of 12 Vdc, you will need 48-50 amps of 12 Vdc to get those 550+ watts of 120 vac.
  • When the vehicles are running this is easy. Will draw down a battery fast when parked.
Really need to pull 12 volt wire to an interior area for install.

There are many brands to choose. I currently run GoPower sine wave and they do make a 600 watt.

This will be a bit of an extra draw on the alternator so best to review what you have and possibly upgrade.
  • Hi,

The oxygen machine may have a start up surge. Try to find out what that is. It may be triple the run wattage.

Buy an inverter which will cover the start up surge.

It will need to be a pure sine wave inverter. Here is one that is 2000 watts and inexpensive. http://www.bestconverter.com/Prowatt-SW2000-Sine-Wave-Inverter_p_375.html#.WOXP0ri1u1s
  • This is kind of similar to the CPAP discussions.

It might be better long term to get an O2 generator that runs directly off of 12 V DC. But as already mentioned, if you need anywhere close to 550 watts, it can't be just plugged into a cigarette lighter type of socket.
