Got a quote for a new Ram to be factory ordered. Price was several thousand below anything the local guys gave. All sounds good until I get the order sheet to confirm the order. They say that the price quoted in "good today" but could cbange upon delivery depending on what rebates are in effect on that day. Price given me includes rebates in effect now. And of course they want a non-refundable deposit.
Sounds a little suspect to me given the local guys said the price is firm and can only go lower if the rebates go up when truck comes in. Last thing I want to do is fly across the country and find out upon arrival that "So Sorry, the rebates expired and here's the new (higher) price.
Anyone done business with Dillon or had this kind of buying experience ?

Dillion was still $3200 less than the best price I could get locally. Smith was a whopping $5 grand More than all of them !

Good job shopping!! I am surprised about Smith, but then again:

Thanks IdaD, will take you up on the advice. Wife was at first a little reluctant to do this but now she is going all through our travel books planning the things and sites we should see on the way back. And without the RV behind the truck it will make it a little more stress free getting around too.

Thought I'd update what I ended up doing. Had 5 Ram dealers I contacted for pricing. Three of which were within 100 miles of us. Dennis Dillion and Dave Smith were the other two. After a lot of back and forth all three local dealers ended up being within $2-3 hundred of each other. Dillion was still $3200 less than the best price I could get locally. Smith was a whopping $5 grand More than all of them ! So much for being competitive I guess.
I had figured in travel cost's out and back and was even more than willing to pay a "premium" for buying locally. But at the end of the day, the other's were just too greedy and the savings too great not to go to Idaho. We are flying out and taking our time coming back. We are planning a cross country RV trip late summer/early fall and already have a list of things to see. We'll use this as an opportunity to cross some of those things off the list as we drive the new truck back home.
Thank you to everyone that responded. Your comments were much appreciated.

Good choice. Enjoy your time out here and the trip back home. Caldwell itself is kind of dumpy so while you're in town I'd suggest staying someplace in downtown Boise - it's a cool downtown with lots of nice parks, the greenbelt and plenty of restaurants. I think the Hampton in BoDo is generally reasonably priced. Also try some local IPAs while you're here. Dagger Falls by Sockeye is a favorite of mine.

Edit - my experience with Dave Smith was the same. I was surprised.

We bought our in Colorado in Sept and drove 1400 miles home! Learned so much about it in those 48 hours. Just watch the spot mirrors when down. Adjust the spot out all the way out and mid up and down. We were able to fly out first class, stayed at a nice Motel at Denver Air Port and the sales lady picked us up on Monday morning. High five'd each other all the way home! Cruising at 80 in Wyoming was fun and effortless in the new RAM.

We did 407 miles in the first afternoon, 660 miles the second day the the remained the morning of the third day. 48 hours dealer in Greeley, Co to home. Chris

Checked prices with three local Ram dealers. The closest of which was $3800 more than Dillion and worst was over $5 grand more. The sales dudes look at me like I have 5 heads when I show them what I can get buy this for (assuming all is on the up and up with Dillion). I have told the locals that they don't need to meet the price, just come relatively close. No deal.
Awaiting word back from Dave Smith on a price. Don't really want to go that far out to get a truck but $5 grand is nothing to sneeze at.

The guy I talked to at Dave Smith got kinda nasty when I told him his quote seemed high and he said I must be talking to Dennis Dillon, and I could call him back after I went in and Dillon changed the deal on me.

But when I went to Dillon, no issues. You won't get the "as low as" price because that includes a bunch of real funky rebates that most won't qualify for, the the "sale price" is their non-negotiated best price. Four other dealerships and the closest I got to the Dillon price was about $1200-1400 more (can't recall exactly). Ask your sales guy to pick you up from the Boise Airport and you can get a free ride out to Caldwell - it's about 30-40 minutes west.

Isn't there a pretty high volume Ram dealership in North Carolina? You might check that out. Even if it isn't quite as good a price, it would entail a lot less driving.

You might be referring to Kernersville Dodge. Their prices look to be in line with what I just looked at on Dennis Dillons website. I looked there when I bought mine and couldn't make a deal, nor could a buddy.
I just don't see any dealer selling a new Cummins for less than 40.

Yeah, that's the one I was thinking of.

I bought mine for a hair over $39k last June, sticker was right at $51k. But prices do look like they're a bit higher on the 2016 models.

I spoke with someone at Kernersville and am awaiting a price. I'd really prefer to do this locally. Don't understand how one place can sell the same truck for thousands less and others won't even come close.

I just bought a Ram and heard the same things about prices. Some dealers would guarantee the price now and others not until delivery. I understand that when ordering a truck there is a price guarantee option available. Maybe it costs the dealer money to use it and that is why some will and some won't.

Several times I've check with Dave smith, dillon etc. when looking at vehicles. In every case local dealers were close enough in price that travel expenses were more than the savings.

On our 2015 Denali, want to know where the dealer got the vehicle we were looking for???? DAVE SMITH. It was on their lot, it was the only one in a three state region that had the options and colors we wanted. Our dealer just had it trucked down to them. Took a couple of days.

Hmmm...I deal with a much smaller dealership and this is the 4th vehicle I've ordered from them and the 2016 Ram 3500 I ordered on Feb, 4th. was based on all incentives at THAT time...Also have it in writing, if incentives are MORE, I will get those.... have NEVER given a deposit...BUT, been dealing with this dealership for 20 years this month....guess that makes a difference?

My dealer likes to say Kellogg is good for cereal. Anyway, the factory rebates do change +or- beyond the dealer's control.

Since they all pay the same for the units, I'm surprised your local dealer doesn't try to earn your business. There is fair money in the hold-back alone.
