Didn't Believe about the Chinese Tires

I went from Atlanta to Tampa this last weekend and blew two tires on the Puma. I had read about Chinese tires hand granading but said to myself that the folks hadn't checked the tire pressures, etc and I already had a couple thousand miles on mine with no problems. This last weekend changed all that. I lost two tires in the matter of hours and when I got to my destination the next day was spent getting 4 new Maxxis 8008 E rated 10 plys installed.

Wow, what a difference in handling alone. It sure made a believer out of me.

I'm just curious here and not trying to start a China tire war. Where did this age old wisdom of a tire must be replaced after 5 years come from? Was it a tire manufacturer or just some people decided you should buy new ones? There are a bunch of tires out there that run a lot more years than that. Where was something credible in print?

I posted the same thing a couple week ago. Unfortunately I did not get by with no damage. I also ordered Maxxis load range E tires as replacements. Had them mounted and balanced and they do seem to ride smoother. Hopefully they last longer than the 2700 miles on my Blowmax tires

In my opinion many tire problems may be caused by speed. I keep my st tires at 60 or below and maintain the proper air pressure. I have put about 1500 miles on this summer and they look brand new and they were factory equipment. The person that goes by me at 75mph or more towing a tt is often the one that is pushing the limits on the tires.

Nay, nay, sez me. ST tires may last three years. See my recent post entitled "Tires and Bugs." If you can get five years out of them you are fortunate indeed.

My last TT went 8 years and many thousands of miles. I put air in one every few months when it was only a couple years and finally took the time to look at it. I ran the last 5 or 6 years with a plug in it. They were made in China and I drive 70 - 75 all the time. I bet most times it's not where it's made that makes a tire fall apart. The TT I have now has tires made in China and I won't take them off until they ware out or I get a new TT.

This thread got me wondering about how many failures there are when the long-haul guys tow all the trailers from Indiana to California, 2,500-3,000 miles. My new trailer had 3,000 mile old china bombs on it when I picked it up!

I agree.
You all who believe it is acceptable and normal for tires to "grenade" when they are 5 years old show your age... Or lack thereof.

Our 1974 travel trailer had the original tires on it in 2006 when we got rid of it. They had gone thousands of miles and lasted... 32 years. (They weren't Chinese.)

My class C had 19 year old tires on it and still looked good....I only changed them after reading on here how RV tires should be changed if older than 7 years...they were Japan made tires.

Don't feel bad, I had the same opinion toward ST tires. After all, I'd had them on my last TT (Carlisle bias-ply's) and never had a problem. I figured it was because I always checked pressure and was no where near the limits.
Then I got this trailer with Carlisle radial. It has even more safety margin with the tires. Should be better right?
Wrong, every one failed and the spare had a tread separation just sitting there.
After getting a set of Maxxiss 4 years ago I never had another problem.
