Diesel vs gas......................

OK folks, there have been a few to many diesel vs gas threads that have shall we say gone to "Hell and a hand basket"! So if all of you would put in you BEST, no flaming reasons for going gas vs diesel, pro and con, I will either leave your thread, or copy and paste pertinant info to the 4 posts of pro and con of diesel or gas. This can include the GM 8.1 vs Dmax or Ford V-8/10 vs PSD etc too.

Be real and honest in you answers, not hear say, flaming etc PLEASE!

If posts are good ones, I will leave, if inflamatory or trolling in nature, they will be deleted! I will get this stick'd to the top for future parusing for those that need this type of info.

Added 6-23-04

We are getting closer to answers I am looking for etc.

Stuff like Ken's - T-Bone posts are good. There are a few others of you that have not posted, some with a 9 point question and answer type to figure out how you went with one or the other. If you are one of those, PLEASE repost in this thread. I may have to look up whom has done this and PM you, but if you think this is you, you now know what to do.

Also, for those of you with $ per gallon for either fuel right now, I would prefer to see a post with ...."in my area, diesel is typically .10 less than unleaded" then explain your numbers. As currently in the Seattle area, diesel and unleaded are any where from 2.05 -2.30 per gallon, with mid test .10 more and premium about .20 more, with equal high low splits. Two weeks ago those prices were upwards of .30 -.40 per gallon more. people were posting $ per gallon that were for me. "I wish" If someone is reading your post a year from now, they may want to know where your paying 1.65, when the price of fuel is over $3 per gallon. Let's keep prices out of it if possible.

Bert and tin tipi, got into a good discusion on the pros and cons of RPM's, drive train etc. I would prefer to NOT see the quote of the other in responding threads, maybe just write a quick wording of re tranny gearing, instead of the whole 40 words or so in that paragragh, so the repsonse is shorter if possible quicker and easier to read etc.

I have deleted some 15+/- posts, that were off topic etc. Please note, I am trying to keep this at the top, as the ONLY gas/diesel thread in this area. So if one is trying to decide, we do not have to go thru this BS any more. As such, I will be deleting ANY future posts close to resembling this type of topic. I may have to change "this" title to a better one, if one has a better sounding title, to be more positive, better claification, let me know here, or in a PM/e-mail, what ever you feel most comfortible with.

Again thank you for all of you that are keeping responses positive, etc.

Also we could use a few more positive reasons to go gas, as many can see I have both gas and diesel, both have a place! Both have positive reasons to buy that fuel, lets keep the threads etc to that purpose only!

With 2010 EPA diesel regulations coming I don't think there is much chance of diesel fuel costing less than gas in the future.

It all comes back to what makes you happy. I love diesels,I have had dodges fords and chevy now. At this time it does not pay. But knowing my luck if I go to gas diesel fuel will drop and gas will be higher. This is a good discussion and I was leary of posting on this as I figured I would get tromped on by everyone. Just trying to show what I see at the present time. In the future I am sure this will change again as far as what is more economical. Thanks all.

I've topped 20MPG with my Fummins (in a big, heavy SuperCab/longbed 4x4) many times, and I DON'T baby my truck--70-72MPH on the highway, etc. Gearing is a hige factor: I have 3.55's and overdrive.

Ones mileage will also depend upon the truck, the best I have gotten with my 05 dmax is 18.x. BUT, I do not expect much more than that, as I have a dually, which will generally speaking, get 1-3 mpg less than an equal equipped SW truck. Hence, why a couple of you may be saying 20 is not doable with a diesel.

In the end, buy what you feel serves you best, and move on from there.

With the Duramax, yes I did get over 20mpg, best being 22mpg running empty. In generaly highway drives, longest being 1600 miles round trip I average 18.6, NOT TOWING. Towing 6700 lbs I was getting 13-14.

What's really amusing here (last few posts) is that someone who seems to have zero experience with owning and operating diesels is making wild generalizations and then resorting to juvenile tactics when someone disagrees.

It most certainly is possible to get 22+ mpg with a diesel pickup driving empty, if one drives conservatively. I've done it several times and my results are based on hand calculations, not a trip computer.

Truth be told...this isn't a pi$$ing contest here. As stated earlier, a TV is going to be a personal decision. I owned an '05 Duramax....absolutely fantastic truck that was crazy with power and as quick as a big block gasser. But times changed for myself and my family....I didn't need the diesel anymore....move on. I now have a V10....and wow, I can't say enough good about it. Mileage?? Who cares, I have the vehicle for one purpose (well a few actually), and that is to tow my camper when and where I'd like. We all can agree that we do not own these ridiculously large vehicles because they get great gas mileage. If you want mileage, by a hybrid and a perm. site somewhere and knock yourself out. In the mean time...enjoy what you have infront of you and happy camping....that's what we're here.

Funny how it makes you think of your little fella.

Sounds like bragging about what you don't have has been a way to cope for you. Lets ask your girl, er I mean your partner how hard and often you have to pull.

"Many an RVer has shared their disappointment about their diesel one on one, but they still sell the image because misery loves company."

Huh? Don't know too many that complain about their diesels, except the cost of fuel. Maybe you have phallus envy

Buying a diesel because you want one (think itโ€™s cool) is completely understandable.

Buying a 3/4-1.5 ton dually and then telling people that you are getting 22+ mpg and saying โ€œwhoooa ya man that baby goes up over any hill on the highway in over-drive at 70mphโ€ is just simply untrue.

I think diesel is All American. Like apple pie and owning a Harley. They don't perform nearly like it feels or is bragged about. They are big and loud, and if I owned one (diesel) I would do exactly the same for itโ€™s an image you seek.

Many an RVer has shared their disappointment about their diesel one on one, but they still sell the image because misery loves company.

"Oh ya, I did the calculations using my abacus last night and after 250,000 miles my diesel is nearly making money for me". "It gets 24mpg and will pull the entire cow heard out ta da next field". "I just got a trade in value for more than I paid for it, but I decided to keep it because they did not have a color I liked".

The instant that someone honestly replies about their diesel or Harley their credibility goes way up for me.

"They are loud, and stink. I only get 7mpg when I am hogging into my RV on hills and I had to pull all $3,000 worth of engine mods off because I kept blowing head gaskets and cylinders under heavy sustained loads". "Wouldnโ€™t trade it for the world because I love my truck".

This is a direct quote from a gent that has owned 2 current model trucks in the last 4 years.

Now thatโ€™s a man with integrity.

Keep in mind that if we bought tow vehicles purely based on cost calculations, most of us would be driving something very different than what we actually tow with.

Buying a gas or diesel TV, like most automobile purchases, has an emotional/irrational aspect to it.

I bought a diesel TV because I wanted one. And the math, while it works for me, wasn't the only deciding factor.

One of the things one has to keep in mind, this thread has been going for 2 yrs or so. back then diesel was 1.40, gas 1.60. Doing the same numbers jwc did, the diesel comes out ahead. Using the fuel cost numbers today, gas is ahead. There will probably never be a end all be all correct answer to this debate! One can only look at the current economic situation and buy accordingly, and if your projections prove wrong, oh well!

Like myself, I was really toying with an ext cab SB GM when I bough my 05. I did not like the trans GM offered. So went CC DW diesel. I get the same mileage as quoted by jwc. If GM had the 6sp hydromatic, I'd have a 6.0 gas in the driveway, and cost per mile would be less than my current diesel. Right now, it is not worth trading in, soooooooo. Keep moving on, know at the time 3 yrs ago, I made the correct decision for what I did at the time. If buying today, decision would be different!

I agree Marty and I am glad my wife pushed me to sell our 6.0 PSD Excursion last fall and not Aug 2008 after the 5 year warranty expired.

I too crunched the numbers comparing my old EX with the V-10 and my new CTD.I was amazed.I used the avg.mpg's for both T/V's and the avg.cost of gas vs fuel. The difference was the EX with the V-10 would cost me $5.40 more to go the same miles, even with the price of diesel being appox. .75cents more per gal.So I guess I didn't do too bad after all trading.
