guess a lot depends on your foot, especially the thin pedal where as if you try to be the first guy up the hill, the big badass diesel) vs just getting in the power zone and let it ride that can affect the MPG..
I have a '03 7.3 with 60 HP tow tune on east coast average 13 MPG pulling a 30 ft airstream. only big hills around here are on Hwy 421 near boone, black mtn on I-40, and fancy gap up I-77. I can pull them in 3rd, (4 speed with OD) keeping up with 55 mph traffice.. running 2K rpm more or less. try less speed and lower gear. :)

I bought my first 2018 duramax, always pulled our 13k 5er with a 6.0 gasser, no real issues other then it was always at about 3k rpm now with the duramax its always around 1800-2000rpm. I am Very dissapointed in the mpg tho, the gasser would always get 7mpg and the duramax only gets 9 mpg, I was expecting far more then a 2 mpg gain for the additional $10k I spent
