I would say that the Ecodiesel is defining a new segment for the light duty pickups. The Ecoboost will not have a long future with 6-7 mpg towing. I can think of a dozen great engines that were cancelled due to poor mileage, the 413 Dodge comes to mind.

Would love an Ecodiesel for its economy, but it cannot handle my tongue heavy trailer. With all the other stuff carried, we need about 2000# payload.
Our F150 3.5L EcoBoost does have the payload (but not quite the rear GAWR) and has more power than I really need. And the towing mileage isn't anywhere near 6-7 mpg. Ours is 10.4 mpgUS, long-term (9K miles) and carefully calculated with an 8000# trailer/sail behind us. About 19.5 mpgUS when not towing.
Not sure why these discussions always have to revert to pissing contests. Both seem to be good trucks so far, but with different capabilities and targeted to different markets.
