Like all diesels, they don't run too good at 3-4k rpms. I wouldn't try to tow heavy with one, that's for sure, but it definitely fills a niche for light loads and grocery getters.
I would say that the Ecodiesel is defining a new segment for the light duty pickups. The Ecoboost will not have a long future with 6-7 mpg towing. I can think of a dozen great engines that were cancelled due to poor mileage, the 413 Dodge comes to mind.

Wow this is a load of BS... I'm sure the engine your referring to was cancelled because it was a total POS.
My 1970 Chevelle 454 was a gas hog and GM produced that engine platform for many years because it was a great engine.
