Dogs in TT's

I know this is kind of an odd question, but we're dog show people new to RV's and will be leaving in a few days for our first dog show with our Travel Trailer. Are there folks out there who travel, leaving their pets back in the trailer when you drive? If so, any tips on how you make things safe for them? Any bad consequences besides the obvious?

Agree with Turtle n Peeps re pets riding in the rear of a pick up. Absolutely, positively not. No way. Living in the south, we tend to see more of that than in the north or west coast, but still feel it's dead wrong.

When we lived in CA our best friend always let his dog ride in the back of his Ranchero - tells you how long ago that was. He had to make a quick defensive maneuver one afternoon and Spot - yes, that was really his name - flew out of the bed and into traffic. Fortunately he only had some scuffs and bruises, the cars nearby stopped in time, but DF was shaken to the core and swore he'd never do it again. And hasn't. I suppose that if you were on a farm and the dog rode from the barn to the field it might be different, but not a chance on a public road.

Even worse when I see a truck barreling down the road with a bunch of kids in the back. No functional brain cells. How would you live with yourself if there were an accident?

The issue is also the heat in the camper. You really don't want an overheated Saint.

I would go to a welding shop, and have them weld a new plate to move the hitch back a couple inches.

My cargo trailer came from the dealer that way because they're always too close to open the tailgate.

My dealer orders them all that way from the factory.

That or maybe there's a way to mount the hitch lower to the ground, or replace it with a shorter one.

OMG!! I can just picture somebody going under this 11 foot 8 overpass and the crate, along with dog, going flying off the roof... That would not be cool. :B

We got tired of sharing our old regular cab with our dog and bought a new truck with super cab. Totally love the super cab with all the space for groceries and valuables and the dog.

No, they sit on your lap with their head out the driver window as you drive down the road. We've all seen that one but doing it with a Saint would be a real picture.

Well, to be legal but not popular here, you could get a 5th wheel toy hauler, cameras with sound, and set it up to run the AC with a gen while going down the road. Even have a remote temp gauge in there. It is legal for a human to ride in a 5th wheel if there is communication to the cab in calif. The Saints could travel in crates, strapped to the floor in the cooled toy area. I've seen that type of setup at shows, not sure they rode back there on the road. Plan B is a class A motor home towing a Jeep Unlimited Rubicon. Guess which plan I like the best.
