driving directions

What is the best route from Rapid City SD to Cody WYO. Also the best route from Rapid City to West Yellowstone Mont pulling the camper. Thanks in advance
  • A few years ago we took the I90/16/20/30/14 route with a GMC 2500 and a 34 foot 5ver without any problems. 5ver weighs 10,500. Are there a few steep grades and a couple tight turns, yep , but nothing we couldn't handle.

Practically speaking the only route from Cody to West Yellowstone is through the park and it slow going in peak season due to the plethora of tourists.
  • I went from rapid city to yellowstone via I 90 and entered YS from the North. nice peaceful drive, no white knuckle experience. and the scenery is the same as any other way.
    bumpy

Not trying to be a wise guy. Are you looking for fastest or most scenic? Avoid tolls? Minimal grades? Are two lane roads to be avoided or sought out?

Not too many worries about toll roads there. LoL

  • If you are comfortable with mountain driving, take I90 west to Buffalo then route 16 over the Bighorn Mountains to Worland then route 20 to Greybull and route 14 to Cody.

A longer route with no mountain driving is to stay on I90 to Laurel (just past Billings) then routes 212, 310, 72 and 120 to Cody.

We have done both in our Class C.

From Cody to West Yellowstone, the shortest way is to drive through the Park. If going direct from Rapid City to West Yellowstone, stay on I90 to Bozeman then route 191 to West Yellowstone.
  • To me the “best” is the one I haven’t traveled before.
