Can you run a generator in the rain? Or should it be covered?

Front hitch with a hillbilly basket is another idea.

Well, I went to buy the generator today and holy cow I guess I didn't realize how big it was. So, I ended up not getting. We just don't think it will fit on the trailer with 4 wheelers and all the other stuff we load on there. So, we are going to get electric site this time and figure out what we are going to do later.

If I was camping in rainy conditions, I'd probably have erected a canopy or screen room so we could be protected from rain as well. That's where I'd put the genreator. My next choice would be to raise the jacks another 3" - 4" and just put the generator under the camper.

I like the umbrellas also.... When I purchase my Honda 2000 next year I'll use my beach umbrella that just sticks in the sand during the rain if I need it. Why not protect the generator ($$)as much as possible? If you take care of something it will usually last a LOT longer than if you don't! ๐Ÿ™‚

I think the umbrellas are a great idea, if the wind is not blowing.

I would cover it. We had several Honda 2000's go out last year tailgating in the rain. They refused to restart until they dried out.

SkiMore, the generator is sitting on a mount I fabricated. The mount itself is mounted to Unistrut, which in turn is fastened to the rear Camper Jack mounts. The ladder carries no generator weight.

The extra gas is a three gallon boat fuel tank. It sits on a lawn chair rack which hooks to the ladder. Both are held in place with two bungee cords. One is enough, but the second bungee serves as a safety.

I have been running this way since about 2005, for thousands of miles.

EDIT: I do not want to hijack this thread, but this photo may provide a bit more detail on my Honda mount.

To get a simple answer to your question, you need to be more specific as to what kind on generator, and if it is under the truck or just in the rain.

I run my Honda in its mount. I do pull its cover over the electrical end to prevent water from running in the receptacle. In my opinion, with the exception of the receptacle, It would be very difficult to get water in the Honda. I have had my Honda 2000 since 2004.

Wayne,
What is your generator and extra gas sitting on? Is it a shelf attached to the ladder?

I use a Honda 2000, on a daily basis as a homebuilder. It runs eight hours a day, sitting in the mud, snow or on a gravel pile. It has spent days in the pouring rain, seen a few snow storms, and got peed on by a dog. After three years, the case is banged up a bit, it needs a tune-up and an oil change. As for a rain cover......seriously? Don't forget to knit a little sweater for it too....it's chilly out.
That is pretty much how I deal with my Honda. When/where I camp, it has not yet needed the sweater. :R

I would cover it (section of plywood over the top) but I would be concerned about completely covering it in a way that inhibits air flow, both intake and exhaust.
