Electrical costs for Snow Birds

For those spending time in the south for the winter, how much electicity are you using per month?

A quick survey of a few campers in Northern Florida, the consumption is between 500 and 700 KWH at $0.135/KWH. This is with heating and hot water via propane. In more moderate months (Oct/Nov/Mar/Apr) with airconditioning, it is slightly higher of course.

Would be interested in others consumption and costs at various campsites in similar areas. I just can't seem to rationalize the consumption rate with the little consumption I seem to use.

Please list your general local, consumption, rate, and what enrgizes the heat and water.

Thanks
  • We are here in Florida for four months every winter, and our electrical cost is zero. We use state parks.
We heat our water and do our cooking with propane, and I use one 30 pound tank in four months.

How much kwhs are you using each month??

It all adds up quickly. Just because it's an RV doesn't mean it will be 'energy efficient'
TV, microwave, fridge, outlets (electric heaters, vacuum cleaner, computer etc) and then converter making up all the battery loads (furnace, lights, water heater etc.)

Whenever we pay for the electric I always read meter at start/finish....typically 500 kwh/30 days

Can't help you with electricity rates as we're mostly at state and national parks down South where the electricity (if any) is rolled into the daily charge.

But I see you use propane as much as you can. Guess it's cheaper to heat with propane than electricity, when you're paying for it separately?

We're just the opposite. Since the park is paying for electricity, we switch everything over to electric asap. Even bring an electric hot water kettle and am thinking about an electric grill.
  • We are in Rockport, TX and have a rate of .16kwh. Or monthly bill runs around $70-$90/month. We use a 1500W heater when required. In MS the rate was .12kwh and most in FL are in the .12 - .14 range.
  • We stayed at Quail Run RV resort in Wesley Chapel FL near Tampa and our electric bill averaged $75 per month. We did not conserve. We used our diesel hydro hot for heat and hot water if we needed it. Did not use electric heat. It was .13 cents per KWH at that time.
