Extra wiring color?

Cabinet in the cabover had these wires. Is there any "standard" for color as to what options they are for?

Four speakers in the ceiling and don't recognize any speaker wires in the cabinet.
  • Every manufacturer is going to use different color wires for different devices. I'm assuming your trying to wire up a sound system and trying to find the factory wires for the speakers? If this is the case, remove the speaker grill and speaker and look to see what color wire the factory used. I checked your profile and I see your rig is a 93 Elkhorn 9vs, correct?
  • I may wire the speakers in, for now mostly just curious what all the wires were for and where they go. Think this would be good info for future mods. Found the wires when trying to find a good place to add a cigarette lighter socket to charge the phone with. Yes the pic is of my 93 Elkhorn.

  • If that's for a stereo, typically:
    black is 12v -
    red is 12v + switched
yellow is 12v + constant hot
speakers are normally green, purple, gray, and white for the + and matching colors with a black stripe for the -

However, there's no way of knowing exactly what those wires are without using a meter and some more investigation.
  • I see a Fluke DVM in your picture, did any have power or ground. If they go to speakers you can test wire a C or D battery and listen for the crackle in the speaker.
  • Have not tested for power yet, probably will tomorrow.

  • Figured out the wires using below suggestions! There are 10 wires and four speakers so......using a AA battery figured out the wires do in fact go to the speakers, 8 of them and the other 2 yellow and white are power and ground after putting a fuse in a blank spot on the board. White is the Elkhorn ground color throughout the camper. The wires tricked me at first because of the size (about 14ga, which seems way overkill for speakers). Thanks for the help.

  • Glad to see you got it figured out. The RV manufactures by their wire in bulk so its cheaper for them to use all the same gauge in the looms for general circuits.
