EZ Pass over Outerbridge Crossing

Posting here because its trailer specific, move if you must.

Question maybe the tt guys can answer. I pulled a utility trailer round trip between NY and Fl. Looking at my EZPass statement , my toll upon returning for the Staten Island Outerbridge crossing was 72.00 For a car alone its 10.5 That's like 6 times more! Its a 2 axel 7x14 and the pickup has passenger plates. Both plates registered with EZpass. That number sound right?

The secret to not getting gouged if you are pulling a TT or 5 th wheel on a toll bridge is to SIT on your EZ pass so it doesn't go off and just pay at the cash booth. It will be double your car, but not 6 times! I learned this from a NJ/PA bridge toll collector this fall . He told me if it picks up your EZ pass electronically, it will charge as if you are a commercial tractor trailer rig with 4 axles. I tried this and it works! If the toll is $1 , I paid $2 by paying cash. If I had let my pass activate, it would be $12, 6 times the cost of just the TV. Check it out!

I refuse to go to anywhere across the Hudson. We owned Class 8 5 axles and they ripped us off for using their antique bridge system with all the holes in the deck.

I haven't towed my camper in Florida yet, but I had a nasty surprise when I flew to Tampa last winter and drove to Venice Beach in a rental car. I declined a sunpass from the rental company because I planned on a limited amount of driving primarily on local roads. I figured I'd just pay cash if I did encounter any tolls. But I didn't realize (nor did the rental agency bother to inform me) that there is no cash option on Florida's toll roads. Tolls are seamlessly collected electronically. A motorist won't even realize he has passed a collection point. Incurring a toll without a sunpass includes a much higher cost which is billed to the cars registered owner. In my case that was the rental agency who helpfully paid the charge and then billed it to me after adding their own charge. The moral of this story is "don't drive anywhere in Florida without a sunpass."

Great!

You gotta wonder how many people have been overcharged and never question it!

The final result, EZPass refunded me 50 dollars and sent a new transponder with a corrected classification for my rig. Im guessing other states also charged incorrectly but Im satisfied as is. Thanks to all who offered help and links, never would have got any results without your guidance.

Just a follow up. As moresmoke indicated, its not weight of the pickup but whether its SRW or DRW that determines a class 4 or 7. On their site there is no mention of weight. It remains to be seen whether they agree with their own rules, they are reviewing the charge now.

I have a pick up and dual axles on my trailer. I was charged $80 and realized they charged me for 5 axles not 4. After numerous transfer of calls to EZ Pass they agreed I was charged incorrectly. The correct charge was $65. I would say your charge is also incorrect. By the way they went right to the video!!!!!

If your pickup is Srw it's $29.50-$31.50. If dually, then it's $72.

Great link, thanks! I can never find stuff like this.
According to the chart the lower price is for a class 7 rec vehicle. They charged me for a class 4. I called to dispute the charge and was asked if the tow vehicle is over 7,000 lbs. Mine is 7185 but I said under. The claim goes in ,it remains to be seen if theres a reduction. Im going to try to google what the specs of a class 7 are.
Again, thanks.

I have 3 EZ-Pass tags for my pickup!
One just the truck. (Car rate) class 2L
One for truck and a single axle trailer class 3L
One for truck and two axle trailer class 4L

The L stands for tow vehicle less than 7 ft high.

ChecK your toll class if you don't use the proper tag they use 4H the highest rate.

By the way the extra tags were no charge! You have to keep unused ones in RF limiting bags not to confuse the system.

Thank you for all the replies. Im hoping this "L" suggestion might make a difference. I can see like 30 dollars but 72 is nuts.

Love tolls. May and June and July were $75 each for me. Accidentally took the Skyway home over Memorial day with the camper. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be:

05/30/16 09:50 AM TOLL ($20.23) SCC Plz 51-Chicago Skyway Westbound-Ln 01W

Indiana got me pretty good last month.

07/28/16 09:11 PM TOLL ($15.89) INDOT Plz -Middlebury-Ln 01W

07/31/16 03:18 PM TOLL ($18.31) INDOT Plz -Portage-Ln 01W

$72 seems a little excessive for one toll.
