With some larger bumper pull TT's, gotta get some of that payload (pin weight) transferred to the front axle to stay under the rear axle rating . . . while also staying under the overall payload rating.IdaD wrote:The thing that you are missing is that some of the load is carried on the front axle. Nobody ever claimed that I, or anyone else, could hang 2,312 pounds off the rear bumper. Some of every pound in the cab is carried by the front axle, for example. 1,800 pounds in the bed is more than I will ever need with this pickup. That is why I like the payload rating.
Based on Ford's spec sheet your empty rear axle curb weight is likely around 2000 lbs. That really only gives you about 1800 lbs to play with in terms of cargo and hitch weight before you max out your RAWR. And likely more importantly your tire ratings, because most half tons come equipped pretty lightly in that regard.
BTW, is your truck 2wd or 4wd? 1/2-ton 2wd trucks typically have 250-300 lbs. more payload than a 4wd (if both trucks are otherwise optioned the same).
