"M" is manual mode. There is a gear selector toggle on the shifter that allows you to command the gears up or down manually. It is a nice feature originated by GM with the Allison transmission and now everybody has it. If you want to take off in 2nd or 3rd gear, you can make it do it. You can pretty much lock into any gear you want except the computer can force a downshift when the rpm drop below a certain level or it will force an upshift if the rpm exceed a preset number.
I use it on the highway to keep from downshifting out of 6th at every little hill while towing my toy hauler.
