- RoyBExplorer IIThat video has been around for a long long time. I suspect the volkswagon in the video was brand new then...
A great idea that never really caught on...
I'm not real sure what an OLD FOGIES is... - deweysmith5ExplorerIt seems that I remember fifth wheel hitches that would mount above the trunks of cars so that even a car could tow a fifth wheel. That was a long time ago so I may have dreamed it in some nightmare that we old fogies have.
- dbblsExplorerI think the first time I saw that was in Popular Mechanics magazine in the 1960's.

And to the spare in the trunk (the car's fifth wheel).

Hehe .... :) - gmw_photosExplorerThat thing is a rolling safety hazard at anything over about 10 mph ! That fifth wheel pin is placed at the point where it has the maximum leverage on the tow vehicle, which is exactly what we do not want. Try to go around a corner quickly with that mess, and the beetle is gonna be on it's side so fast you won't know what is happening.
There is a reason why some things just don't catch on.....
It could, I suppose be handy for moving trailers around the parking lot at the RV dealership...... - clubhouseExplorer

Had neighbor when I was a kid that had a Cadillac Eldorado with "turn over" hitch mounted right through the trunk. He was a real cowboy that puller his slant trailer with the Cadillac - Mike_UpExplorerI like this one even better. They said it was a fifth wheel but looks more like a goose neck.
