Ford 7.3 turbo: exhaust too loud

Go buy a roll of silver insulation and insulate the rear of the cab, floors and inside of doors. Get her some ear plugs. Drive your 7.3 cuz there are'nt many left and they were the castiron truck motor. Owned one for 10 years.

Same here, a little louder than stock and a drop in EGTs.

But as always I wish the truck were quieter :)

X3 with Chris the first 24 valve Cummins are the kings of wake up calls. I think the OP is focused on exhaust drone and tailpipe noise. I had a 2001 7.3 and used the Magnaflow 4" down pipe back system, great temps and no drone. I believe Magnaflow will sell just the muffler.

If the truck has non-stock exhaust it probably has a non-stock intake as well, and that drone you're hearing could be coming from the intake side. I had a '95 F350 for almost 15 years and did many mods to it, one of them a Tymar intake. The amount of noise from under the hood definitely increased when I replaced the stock air filter box with the round Donaldson filter.

But, it also had a 4" turbo-back MBRP exhaust that while it included a muffler, it was also louder than OEM. In my opinion, lowering the cab noise in any of the 7.3 trucks is going to take more than just adding a muffler.

I went with a 4" turbo back with a MBRP resonator and the exhaust doesn't have the irritating drone of the straight exhaust. I tow also and a noisy/drone exhaust is not conductive to conversation in the cab.

Some areas to check for noise.

1. Turbo up pipes - These are notorious for leaking and can make quite a racket as it is right next to the cab
2. Exhaust back pressure valve - If it is sticking it is noisy and bleeding boost. You will get a loud "whoosing" sound if stuck
3. Exhaust and how it is mounted - It should have rubber mounts to isolate the vibration. If they are gone it can make the exhaust vibrate the frame and the harmonic can be maddening

Ford made a firewall sound deadening kit for the Excursions that can be added to the firewall of the Superduties. There is also a lot of sound leakage around the steering shaft where it goes through the firewall. I have seen a couple of mods with a foam coozie used to seal it up. The other big helper is good rubber window and door seals and sound deadening product in the door panels. Biodiesel also makes a huge difference in how loud my truck is. A HPX crossover pipe helps too and so does a in tank fuel pickup mod as the fuel system sucks air which makes the injectors really noisy.

There are lots of things to do but no silver bullet. The 7.3 is loud.

Actually the 98.5-2002 24V Cummins is considered the loudest one! The 12V have a softer tone. 24V have all the normal noise plus a sharp over tone!

I agree my Sons 98.5 engine noise is louder than my 98 12V.

Lucky for us the noisy cummins are getting to be few for towing rv's so the problem isn't so bad anymore. I say us where we winter not every where so don't get riddled up.
