Escape weighs significantly less than the explorer. Since it was introduced the Explorer 2.0 was limited to 2000 lbs, same as the 2.0 in the Edge. When I said not for towing, I mean it can tow a jet ski or a tiny utility trailer, but not really for campers unless they are really small.
At some point, the 2.0 engine was dropped in favor of the 2.3, which has a higher tow rating of 3000 when properly equipped. The 2.0 was never rated above 2000 lbs. as far as I know.

Thanks, but looks like a long wait. This article suggests the Ranger will return in the 2019 model year and the Bronco in 2020.

Do you have a link - googling it only got me lots of rumors about it coming to N/A. It could be an interesting option - I'll be in the market in a year or two - >300k on my current Explorer and while it's still highly reliable that's a bit high for some longer trips I want to take.

even with the Ecoboost, the Explorer is still limited to 5000lbs. of towing capacity.
really limits what you can tow.
