Fuel Mileage with TC

Yahoo! On the last trip we got 14.8 MPG! Oh man, it was so easy pulling into Wally World to buy my bicycle a light. We were not dragging boat nor bike trailer. If my mind serves me right we got a little over 11 when we took the boat on a previous trip. We shall find out real soon about the bike trailer as we will be towing it on a trip. We enjoyed our fiver but downsizing to the TC has been a good move for us.

Two identical round trips 115 miles each way. Leave at sea level climb to 4200 feet about half way, decend to 1300 feet end of trip one way.

Hand calculated 10.55 trip one, 11.20 trip two. think it had to be going about 5 mph slower due to traffic on trip 2.

Lance 950S, maybe 800 pounds of gear/water. 2010 CTD SRW LB AT 4x4, no mods to engine.

Bad mileage, but "going to be dead a long time".

Hand calculation is easy for me because I get 10mpg almost exclusively. This is at or below 65mph. It drops to 9 with a headwind and goes up to 11 under ideal conditions. Interestingly, we just bought a Jeep and flat towed it over 3ooo miles last month and there was no difference in the mileage. It was actually slightly better. No I didn't. When I got to Redding, CA (heading south) the temperature outside was over 90* at 9am. It was between 95* and 100* all the way home from there. I climbed 2000 ft to get from the Sacramento Valley to Placerville. The engine temp went up just a hair past the half way point on the long climbs. I left cruise control on at 57mph the whole way. The AC was running too, about 1/3 it's capacity, to keep it about 75 in the truck. There's a pretty large gap between the bike and the front radiator. About 2 feet.

Ours is a non H.O. 5.9 diesel. We drove 1,000 each way to pick up our used Northstar TC-650. Going there (N/W WA to SOCAL) we got. 21.1 , 19.80, 20.91, and 20.45 MPG. Coming home with the camper on the MPG was 14.68, 15.53, 15.12, and 15.45.

Pulling the horse trailer with 2 horse will probably cost us another 2 MPG but we haven't taken a long trip yet to find out.

Currently we are a month into our summer trip from Florida to western Colorado, by way of South Dakota, to Missoula Montana. Dropped down to Yellowstone for a week. Now in southern Utah, going to Colorado tomorrow. Just over 4,000 miles on the trip so far.

So far, with towing our Jeep Unlimited at about 4,000 lbs, running in the 60-62 mph range, the Lance 845 in the back, we have averaged 12.23 mpg for the trip. The truck now has just over 17,000 miles on it.
Towing the Jeep is costing me less than half a mile per gallon, so I am pleased with that figure. While I would like better mileage, like everyone else, for a truck that weighs over 8,000 lbs empty, loaded the way we are on this trip, pulling in the mountains much of the time, I am satisfied with the 12.23 mpg.

I just made a round trip from Placerville,CA to Rogue River,OR. A trip of 380 miles each way. On the way up, I carried 30 gallons of fresh water. On the way home I drained all the water and made sure gray and black tanks were empty as well. I drove at exactly 57mph both ways and it took me exactly 8 hours for each direction including a fuel stop and a pit stop. I have a 2006 Dodge Diesel w/4 door 4x4 short bed and a 2012 Lance 855S. I had a 2002 Kawasaki KX250 Motocross motorcycle on the front receiver hitch, which weighs a total of 265 pounds and a trailer hauling a 2003 BMW Dakar F650GS Adventure motorcycle weighing a total of 800 pounds.

I got 14.8mpg both directions.

The exciting thing was; I went over the mountains at 57mph and still had plenty of peddle left if I were to try and drive faster.

Ol'Red comes in at 13.5-14mpg empty and 9.5-10.5 loaded at 10,500 with the beefy 460 and 5spd manual trans. Towing the Scout doesn't seem to have any effect of mpg, just speed climbing hills. I usually run at about 57mph for best mileage, that's right about 2000 rpm's where my 510 lbs of torque is at its best. Unless its a long or steep hill I rarely drop below 1800 rpm.

If and when the 460 dies I will retro a 5.9 12 valve CTD in it and change the rear gears to 3.55 for freeway cruising.

With a dual-slide Lance 992 on a '13 F350 diesel dually 4x4, I am getting about 11 at 70-75mph. The truck is still new with only 5k miles on it. I have a hard time going slow, but the few times I've been able to do it at 60-65 I got about 12.5 mpg. Without the camper on I get about 15.5 at 75mph.

TC only at 55 is 14.5mpg in hilly areas, not mountains. About 13.7 at 62.
Towing my 21 ft pontoon is 10.5 at 65. Towing the pontoon at 55mph is 12.5 on flat ground.
