Getting a new truck

My wife and I have a 2018 Ram 3500 Tradesman on order and it has been built and will be on its way to my dealer shortly.
It will then be time for an upgrade from our 4500 lb, 23 foot TT to a 30 foot 5er in a year or so. Quite a sizable upgrade from our no slide TT. It’s just the two of us (with occasional grandkids) so we don’t need, or want, anything bigger. I just don’t want to pull around some monster 5er. The trailers’s GVW we’re looking at is less than 10,000 lb. and less than 2000 lb pin weight.
Some specs on the new truck.......
Regular cab. I really want it to fit in the garage. If we bring the grandkids, we’ll take two vehicles.
2WD. Don’t want or need 4WD. Adds weight I don’t need and adds something else to go wrong!
8 foot bed. Since I don’t have four doors it will still fit in the garage. More room for my stuff including the mini bike I want.
5th wheel/gooseneck prep. I think I will be going with an Andersen hitch.
6.4 Hemi. ‘Nuff said. Can’t afford the Cummins.
4.10 rear end. Low end grunt to pull the 5er from a stop and up hills.
The finished spec sheet says 4140 lb payload capacity. I will never have to worry about what I put in the bed again. Well, within reason.

This will be my last truck so I’m not worried about resale value. I bought it to use, not to sell.

We’re getting pumped since it will be here soon. My current truck and its 4.9 is 15 years old with over 170,000 miles on it and has served us well but it is time for her to be replaced.

Congrats. The 6.4L Hemi and 4.10 combo worked really well for me pulling a 37 foot long 12,000 lbs 5er.

Your response is pretty much what I’ve been reading in a lot of places. I won’t be towing quite your weight so I am really looking forward to the performance of this truck!

Here is a video I made of mine towing.

Congrats in the new ride. I think it would be quite difficult to find one like you ordered already on the lot. Pretty rare to see a regular cab anywhere I travel.

You are correct. We looked around and the dealer looked around as well and there were none like I wanted. There were similar but with a lot of options I just didn’t want to spend money for.
  • Every time I start looking at new trucks I get a little scared. There's so much to go wrong with the new ones and my 5000 mile/year mileage with several short trips a week driving style is he11 on the new diesels.
I bet just the DEF thing would be problematic for me. Probably go sour in the trucks tank before I could use it up.
  • You had me until you mentioned Hemi, 2wd and Andersen. :R

    Enjoy your new ride!
